Dallas Cowboys defensive back and kick returner Adam “Pacman” Jones has been suspended (again) by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell without pay for at least four games for his most recent violation of the league’s Personal Conduct Policy. In the suspension letter Adam received today, Commissioner Goodell called this “a disturbing pattern of behavior and clearly inconsistent with the conditions I set for your continued participation in the NFL.” In a statement released by the Cowboys, team owner Jerry Jones said:
“We respect and support the decision of the commissioner. I regret that this issue has brought negative attention to the Cowboys and the NFL. We move forward with a very clear knowledge as to what the process will be for a possible re-instatement. Adam is well aware of where he stands and what he has to do.”
Well aware of where he stands and what he has to do? I don’t think so. If he was well aware of where he stood and what he had to do, he wouldn’t have found himself partying at some downtown Dallas hotel in the first place. He would’ve taken his butt home after practice and sat it on the couch where it belongs. How many other Cowboys players were there drinking and carousing? None. I guess they all “get it” and Adam is the only one who doesn’t.
I’m all for second chances and I will stick up for a person’s ability to change to to a fault, but this is so clearly a case of a guy who will never change. And it hurts me to say that but it’s true. I think you can give Adam Jones a hundred opportunities and he is going to screw up each one. Bottom line, he should not have put himself in that situation and he did. So now he has to suffer the consequences. And he’s very lucky he didn’t receive an immediate lifetime ban from the league. It’s not the severity of the incident. It’s the fact that Adam knew he had no margin for error and he chose to put himself in a position to fail. I think Adam has behavioral problems that require intensive psychotherapy. Maybe that will be part of his latest rehabilitation.
NFL Network analyst Deion Sanders was defending poor Adam on “Total Access” tonight as though this cruel decision was some sort of tremendous example of injustice. Give me a break. Then again, it’s Deion’s habit to stand up for any and every NFL miscreant, having been one himself in another lifetime. And I could admire his attempts to help others if he wasn’t so arrogant about it. But to say Adam’s “lifelong dream has been stripped away again” is just a downright ridiculous thing to say. Of course, Deion would have you believe he knows exactly what went down last Wednesday morning and that the NFL’s extensive research into the situation that determined their course of action is essentially bogus. Unbelievable.
At any rate, because Adam has violated Commissioner Goodell’s zero tolerance policy, I think the commish should give Adam a lifetime ban before he causes the NFL any more embarrassment. Enough is enough. I mean, exactly how many chances do you give a guy? The United Football League awaits.

So if Adam Jones should get a lifetime ban, I’m curious to know you think Michael Vick should receive?
Well, I’m glad I’m not the one making these decisions because you’re dealing with a person’s livelihood. And I’m sure these are not easy decisions for Commissioner Goodell. But Michael doesn’t have the history Adam does — the ongoing pattern of behavior that says “I can’t stay out of trouble.” Obviously, Adam can’t. He’s proven that. And he’s giving the league a black eye.
Michael just made one BIG mistake. And I guess it depends on how heinous you think his crime was. I think it was awful. Besides that, I’ve talked with Michael and found him to be exactly as this type of behavior would indicate. He’s a thug. Can he change? Of course. I hope he does or already has. But I think the NFL can do without Michael Vick. He can play professional football in another league. If they’ll have him.
