Brett Favre finally filed paperwork for reinstatement into the National Football League today. He faxed a letter to the league office around 5 p.m. EST. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell did not immediately act on the request (hey, normal business hours are 9-5), but he’s likely to approve Brett’s reinstatement tomorrow. The Packers would then have 24 hours to do something with Brett — a.) add him to the 80-man roster, b.) trade him or c.) release him. That’s an easy one. They’ll add him to the 80-man roster initially. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said Brett would have to pass a physical and go through a conditioning test before he could practice, so expect to see Brett as — ahem — Aaron Rodgers’ backup beginning Friday. After practice today, Coach McCarthy said:
“There’s no ill feelings toward Brett Favre, and he will be welcomed back in our locker room. I’m not going to sit here and tell you it’s not a distraction. But it’s only a distraction if we let it be a distraction.”
After all that’s happened in this “unretirement” saga, it’s hard to believe Brett will be a Green Bay Packer again. There just seems to be too much bad blood between Brett and management. At the same time, it would be even more unusual to see him in another uniform. It’s anyone’s guess where this thing is headed. I really believe it will be a day-to-day fiasco. There are so many questions that will need answering, but ultimately … Will Brett Favre, the NFL career leader in touchdown passes and a three-time most valuable player, really be a $12 million/year backup quarterback after starting the previous 253 games for Green Bay? Wrap your brain around that one.

The Green Bay Press Gazette is reporting that Packers president Mark Murphy is flying to Brett’s home in Mississippi to try to persuade him not to report to Packers training camp. Mark will meet with Brett and agent Bus Cook Wednesday morning. What a great time for an unconditional release. The Packers are obviously incredibly desperate at this point.
