Brett Favre has asked the Green Bay Packers to let him go. Which is kind of funny because he doesn’t really even play for the Packers. But following a conference call with the team earlier this week, Brett expressed his desire to come back to the game this season. After talking with the team, however, it became evident the Packers don’t want him back. So what we do know is that Brett still wants to play football. It just appears it’s unfathomably going to be with another team. I’m sure he would prefer to rejoin the Packers, but they seem to have made a commitment to quarterback Aaron Rodgers and are set to move on without Brett. In response to the situation, the Packers released this statement today:
“The Green Bay Packers are aware of the latest developments regarding Brett Favre. Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms. We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion. Brett’s press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement. The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team. As a retired player, Brett has the option to apply for reinstatement with Commissioner Goodell. If that were to occur, he would become an active member of the Green Bay Packers. As always, the Packers will do what’s right and in the best interest of the team. As with all Packers greats, Brett’s legacy will always be celebrated by our fans and the organization, regardless of any change in his personal intentions. Brett and Deanna will always be a part of the Packers family.”
As I said earlier this week, I can’t imagine Brett playing for any other team. But it sure appears that’s what’s going to happen. I can understand the Packers wanting a firm commitment from Brett. And obviously they didn’t get that when he officially announced his retirement back in March. But I still think he gives the team their best chance of getting to the Super Bowl. Maybe the two sides will be able to work something out in the next couple weeks, but after Brett receives his reinstatement from Commissioner Goodell (he’s on a reserve/retired list right now), he’ll be a Green Bay Packer again and all indications are that the Packers will either trade him or release him.
