The Indianapolis Colts finally activated franchise quarterback Peyton Manning today. It’s been more than a month since his knee surgery and speculation has been ongoing that he would require more time than anticipated to recover. But he’s actually on schedule (4-6 weeks) and ready to practice:

“This is a significant step for me to get back out on the practice field. If things go well, as we expect they will, then I hope to be full-go next week and ready for the season opener.”

Naturally, he’ll be limited in practice at first, but there has to be some concern over his readiness. I think if any quarterback in the National Football League can be prepared with little or no training camp/preseason practice time, it would be Peyton (Tom Brady would also be on my list as he faces similar conditions with his bum foot). Peyton will be ready mentally. But physically, I wonder if his knee is truly ready or if a few more weeks of rest and rehab would allow to him to report at 100%. Unfortunately, with only 16 games on the regular season schedule, it’s a luxury the Colts can’t afford.
