Cowboys Release Terrell Owens

I wasn’t the least bit surprised to see the Dallas Cowboys release receiver Terrell Owens today. The first two jobs I had for the Cowboys this offseason were to dump Adam Jones and Terrell Owens. Now that they’ve done both, I think they can get serious about finding the right players to build a winning team chemistry. With this move (which will cost the team over $9 million against the salary cap), owner Jerry Jones — who seems to favor the flamboyant — now appears to be serious about doing the right things to win a championship again. He explained his decision:

“Terrell Owens was a very productive player who performed at a very high level for all three of his years here in Dallas. But we have made a decision to move forward without him. …In the aftermath of the season, we talked about change. Some of what is changing involves the process and some of it involves people. This is a decision that was made based upon consideration for an entire team. We will move on now with a new team, a new attitude, and into a new stadium. The evaluation process and the prospect for change will continue at every level of the organization.”

I think they key word Mr. Jones used there is attitude. T.O. didn’t bring the kind of attitude an organization needs to field a winning team. It has been, was, and probably always will be about T.O. He continually puts himself before whatever team he is playing for. The Cowboys were arguably the most talented team in the National Football League last season, but they didn’t even make the playoffs. What’s wrong with that picture? I’m not saying T.O. is a bad guy or anything. He just doesn’t seem to understand how to be a team player and that will never work in this sport.
