Daunte Culpepper to Patriots?

With Tom Brady on the shelf for the rest of the 2008 season, are the New England Patriots considering giving recently retired quarterback Daunte Culpepper a call? Shortly after Tom’s devastating injury yesterday, the Pats contacted free agent QBs Chris Simms and Tim Rattay. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen (reporting on Monday Night Countdown), when they showed up for their interviews/workouts today, both players were sent back to the airport because plans had changed. I just got off the phone with Patriots Executive Director of Media Relations Stacey James and all he knew of the matter was that Coach Belichick told him no quarterbacks worked out today.

Now, I don’t have any concrete information to share in regards to the Patriots’ potential interest in Daunte, but doesn’t it make sense? Who else are they going to consider? Rookie Kevin O’Connell is in line to take over if anything happens to Matt Cassel. Nobody else is left at that position on the active roster. The team cut Matt Gutierrez during the preseason. So who will the Patriots turn to? Who? Daunte Culpepper is the obvious choice. If Brett Favre can come out of retirement, why not Daunte Culpepper?

Culpepper to Moss… I think that connection worked once before. But it would be nice to see Daunte back healthy and playing in the NFL.

  2. Nick Gallagher says:

That was my first thought when I heard Brady limped off the field and I still think that would be the most effective bandaid for the patriots this season and could turn out to be a great sports story some day. Bring back the Culpepper-Moss connection and this time without the Barney purple shirts and with some red white and blue!!

  3. Darrell Snyder says:

I think it’s going to be who Randy wants and Culpepper does fit that connection.I’m trying to think who else Belechick would know of and can’t come up with any other possible scenerios. I don’t know where Jake Plummer …Daunte just makes sense … But how is his knee ????

  4. IAMUCFMAN says:

Daunte, I remember the bright eyed player with a smile on his face. Get bak to the game you love. Embrace the league and they will embrace you as we did at UCF.

  5. Nico says:

Daunte seems like he would be a good fit for the Patriots, who could probably win with Dan Marino if he came out of retirement…..

THe most likely scenario, tho, is that Matt Cassell will be the starter (remember how Brady got the job?) and Daunte the backup, if he accepts an offer if they tender him one, unlike the offers from the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers late in the offseason.

  6. Jersey says:

I don’t really see this happening. If anything I think the Pats will pick up Chris Mortensen. Culpepper will be kicked out immediately as soon as Brady gets back.
