Denver Broncos on the Offensive

Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler is reminding many of the team’s glory days QB John Elway. Granted, he has a long way to go to achieve Super Bowl victories and Hall of Fame status, but his quick release and gunslinger mentality can’t help but draw comparisons after the Broncos disposed of the Raiders (41-14) on Kickoff Weekend and the San Diego Chargers (39-38) today. Jay’s the NFL’s yardage passing leader after two games and his team is 2-0. The Broncos rally around him and you almost get the sense he’s going to make something good happen when the ball is in his hands. That’s exactly the type of quarterback every team hopes for.
But one player does not a great offense make. Receiver Brandon Marshall, returning from a one-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, caught a team record 18 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown against the Chargers. He was just two shy of the all-time NFL record held by Terrell Owens. Selvin Young (7.6 ypr) and Andre Hall (5.4 ypr) are making the most of their opportunities after two games, running the football in typical Broncos zone blocking, one-cut downhill style. Tight end Tony Scheffler is averaging 19.4 yards per catch with two touchdowns. Receiver Eddie Royal (14 catches, 2 TDs) is making his early claim for the NFL’s Rookie-of-the-Year. And yesterday, head coach Mike Shanahan’s gutsy, all-or-nothing two-point conversion attempt sent a message to his team that not only does he believe in their ability to get the job done, but the team will step on your throat when they have the opportunity to do so.
