Donte Whitner Arrested, Released

Buffalo Bills safety Donte Whitner was zapped with a stun gun and then arrested outside a Cleveland night club last night. Apparently, Donte was at Miami Dolphins receiver Ted Ginn Jr.’s birthday party at the House of Blues. He was thrown in jail on suspicion of aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest but was then released without being charged with anything.

Donte would later release a statement through his agent, Neil Cornrich, saying it was not how he wises to conduct himself and apologized to all those involved. The Bills released a similarly generic statement saying they were aware of the incident but had no comment until they had all the facts. As Donte was walking out of jail, however, he further proclaimed his innocence and said he plans to file a lawsuit against the Cleveland police department because the stun gun episode was “absolutely not” necessary.

The incident sounds like a whole lot of nothing. Knowing Donte as I do, I can say he’s a really good guy. I haven’t met a nicer player to talk to and I know his image as a positive role model to young people is important to him. He’s very active in the Buffalo community and he’s one of the NFL’s top United Way spokesmen along with Santana Moss (Redskins) and Bob Sanders (Colts). But this just goes to show how, as an NFL player, you really can’t go out to a nightclub without a good deal of risk. As innocent as the whole event probably was, it’s always about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And not putting yourself in a position to have something like this happen. Ted Ginn Jr.’s birthday party should not have been held at a public place like this. It’s really just poor judgment for everyone involved.
