Eric Smith Fined, Suspended

N.Y. Jets defensive back Eric Smith was suspended for one game and fined $50,000 for his vicious helmet-to-helmet hit on Arizona Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin yesterday late in the 4th quarter of a 56-35 Jets win. As I mentioned yesterday, Anquan emerged relatively unscathed although he was knocked unconscious and probably wasn’t feeling very well today. The Cardinals only said that he was “resting comfortably at home” today.

This was a flagrant violation of player safety rules that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell emphasized less than two weeks ago in a memo to all NFL teams. I guess Eric didn’t get the memo.
