I was watching the Dallas-Houston game last Friday night when Texans wide receiver Harry Williams was injured on an attempted special teams tackle. While the injury was, in fact, serious in nature — he suffered a fracture of the C-3 vertebrate — I’m happy to report that Harry underwent surgery today to fuse the bones at the C-2 through C-4 levels and is doing well. Sadly, his football career is most likely over, but he’s lucky he’s alive. Texans General Manager Rick Smith said:

“The first thing that goes through your mind is the rest of his life. That’s what this league is about. That’s where people don’t really understand what these guys subject their bodies to. It is a sacrifice when these guys put on a helmet and go out every time on the field. That’s why we appreciate it, and certainly our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, but it’s a scary situation.”

So, the next time you hear someone complaining about the money these guys are making, offer a reminder that they are literally putting their health at risk each time they step on the field. In Harry’s case, one minute he’s playing a game and trying to make a football team. The next he’s literally fighting for his life because of an awkward turn. I hope Harry makes a complete recovery and can resume a normal life, even if it is without football.
