The Chicago Bears were so pleased with quarterback Jay Cutler’s first five games, they decided to keep him around through 2013—to the tune of roughly $20 million guaranteed and $30 million in new money. Clearly, this is a tremendous stamp of approval. But is it premature? The Bears are 3-2 under Jay’s leadership. And his numbers aren’t bad. But they aren’t incredibly impressive, either—10 touchdowns, seven picks and an 86.9 passer rating. And he’s thrown for 1,201 yards which puts him exactly in the middle of the league. I’m not saying Jay doesn’t deserve the raise. Only time will tell if he’s worth this kind of money. It’s a matter of gut instinct. I guess if you feel as though you’ve found the quarterback for your future, you lock him up. And that’s exactly what the Bears did.
