I think Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald proved why he is the NFL’s best receiver in a 33-13 NFC Divisional Playoff win over the Carolina Panthers tonight. Without the security of All-Pro receiver Anquan Boldin on the other side, Larry was the focal point (or at least he should’ve been) of the Carolina defense but still managed eight catches for 166 yards and a touchdown. Cards quarterback Kurt Warner explained afterward:
“Unbelievable. They gave us some favorable situations and we always count on Larry to kick start our offense with the big play. He is our big playmaker and he didn’t disappoint us again today. You knew with Q (Anquan Blodin) not being out there they were going to focus on him and they knew we were going to go to him for big plays and it didn’t matter.”
Larry caught everything thrown at him. Which is what you’re supposed to do when you’re a (supposed) superstar in a big game. He worked the sidelines for some catches. He ran and stretched and scored (airborne from the three yard line) after one reception. But most impressively, Larry made his usual aforementioned circus catch to ignite the Cards. It was on third-and-one around midfield with about five minutes to go in the first quarter — a 41-yard grab between two Carolina defenders. Arizona never looked back.
