NFL Players Will Wear Pink Cleats, Gloves

To follow-up my NFL Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month post from yesterday, here is a photo sent to me by the Minnesota Vikings. Linebacker Chad Greenway is the team’s breast cancer spokesperson. And during the month of October—along with teammates Antoine Winfield, Brett Favre and Chester Taylor—Chad will be donning these pink cleats (along with other pink-themed equipment) in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Chad’s wife Jenni is also getting involved. She will be one of many volunteers handing out pink ribbons and towels Monday night at the Metrodome when the Vikes host the Green Bay Packers.

Chad was humbled that wearing pink cleats could mean so much:

“I think the purple and pink will clash. But we’ll make it work ….. It’s something our family has battled through, with my grandmother. We watched her battle, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to take the lead on it. I was excited for the chance, because there’s only a few guys on each team that get a chance to do that. And to be chosen, for whatever reason, was a great privilege. You can’t talk to anybody who hasn’t been affected by some form of cancer. For every survivor, and every person who is battling it, it’s more than just a color.”

Now, these certainly aren’t the only players who plan to wear pink equipment this month. All 32 teams have reps ready to support the cause. But as long as we’re pumping players named Chad wearing pink cleats, check out Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco’s pink wardrobe plans on his Twitpic. He’s going with pink wristbands as well as a chin strap and mouthpiece, too. Pretty awesome stuff, Chads.

Hey Dave, as a cancer survivor, the Squibster knows that breast cancer awareness is very important. Cancer is brutal. The pink shoes will certaintly get noticed!

Hello! My mother is fighting Breast Cancer and I would like to know how to purchase the cleats and gloves that the players are wearing, I play kind of a semi-pro football league and would like to wear the gear

  5. Sandy says:

I want one of the caps that Minnesota is wearing tonight on Monday Night Football with the pink visor on it. Anyone know where I can get one?

  6. Derek (subscribed) says:

I too was wondering if anyone knew if these gloves were going to be for sale in the coming days? I think it a great thing the NFL is doing, and I’d like to get on the bandwagon and purchase a pair of gloves for my season.

  7. David Kindervater says:

Sandy, you can get the cap with the pink visor at NFLShop.com. You can also get a bunch of other pink themed items there. As for the gear (cleats, gloves)—I asked the league headquarters and to our best knowledge—those are not for sale to the general public.

The NFL just sent me an email…

If you’re interested, Cutters is selling their pink gloves at sporting goods stores:

And beginning now, fans can visit NFL Auction (http://www.NFLAuction.NFL.com) to bid on signed pink gear from players after they’re done using the cleats/gloves, etc.

  9. Derek (subscribed) says:

Dave, thanks for the update on the gear. I too noticed that Cutters is selling the pink gloves, but I just didn’t feel as though they were in the same league as Nike or Reebok…either way, thanks for finding out all the deets as it is much appreciated!

  10. Michelle says:

I’m looking for a visor like the New Orleans Saints coach was wearing . . . not a hat/cap. I can find the hats with the pink bills/visors. Any suggestions as to where to look?

  11. Bill Thatch says:

if you want to have a similar effect on the field, NFL does sell the hot pink NFLE sweat bands, and you can get hot pink laces from lacesforless; i have been wearing hot pink laces in all of my cleats and sneakers for the past few years. i’m quite large so noone has ever said anything negative, but now i feel like a visionary – people are asking me if i am doing it because of the NFL players, haha…
