Commissioner Roger Goodell notified Pacman Jones today that, effective immediately, he may participate in organized team activities with the Dallas Cowboys, including training camp and preseason games. In a letter to Pacman, Commissioner Goodell wrote that a final determination on his reinstatement for the 2008 regular season will be made by September 1. Commissioner Goodell told Pacman that his continued participation in the NFL depends on demonstrating that he can conduct himself in a lawful and reliable manner. Pacman will be expected to continue the personal conduct program established for him by the NFL and the Cowboys and to avoid further adverse involvement with law enforcement.
This is as good as a reinstatement, but it’s more or less a trial run. Obviously, if Pacman keeps himself out of trouble, he will be fully reinstated as a member of the Dallas Cowboys for the regular season. I’m happy for him. And I’m happy for the league. Pacman brings a lot of excitement and playmaking ability to the game. I just hope he realizes what a privilege this is and how lucky he is to be able to continue his professional football career. I also hope he realizes how much scrutiny each and every move he makes will be given. He is under a microscope — with a zero tolerance policy — and any slip-up will result in his permanent dismissal from the National Football League. That’s heavy. Pacman’s been given a tremendous opportunity. I just hope he knows what to do with it.
