N.Y. Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress has a good feeling about the re-negotiations on his current contract and expects he’ll have a new deal before training camp starts July 24. In fact, he’s so confident of a new deal, he said there was “no question” it will get done:
“I’m getting good feedback. I think it’s going to get done. I’m not concerned about it. I don’t want to go anywhere, I’m happy here in New York, I just want to make sure I’m here for a long time.”
This is a recent trend among disgruntled players who feel their team owes them more than what they are currently under contract for. Plax still has three years remaining on the deal he signed with the Giants as a free agent prior to the 2005 season. He’s scheduled to make $3.25 million this season and a total of $7.25 million over the next two years. But because he helped the Giants win a Super Bowl last season and pretty much played through 2007 with a wide variety of injuries, he wants an extension or some kind of revamped deal before he steps on the field again. He wants long-term security. Who doesn’t? The question now is whether the Giants will give in and make Plax happy or stand firm and force him to play out his contract.
