Randy Moss Denies Assault Allegations

Another nut is on the loose trying to get money from a professional athlete. And she’s got help. This time the target is New England Patriots WR Randy Moss and the charges of alleged battery are being reported by a central Florida AM radio station. Randy’s a good one to single-out. The Patriots are in the spotlight and close to the Super Bowl as a (still) undefeated team. And it would be believable because of his “troubled” past. He hasn’t exactly been a model citizen on- and/or off-the-field. But Randy set the record straight outside his locker today, breaking his usual midweek silence:
“I want to make something clear. In my whole entire life of living 30 years, I’ve never put my hand on one woman in an angry manner. They’re false allegations, something I’ve been battling for like the last couple of days of threats going public if I didn’t pay X amount of dollars. So before people rush quick to judgment I think you need to find out the facts about, really, what’s going on. This young lady by no means is hurt. I didn’t hurt her. It’s very unfair to athletes if a person makes a false claim. You know, there’s nothing that we can do. The only thing that we can do is either pay up or sit back and listen to what’s being said or what’s being written. For someone to make a false claim about me, I’m kind of furious. It kind of hurts me deep inside for someone to do something like that because, you know, I’ve always said time and time again, I’m going to stand up for what’s right. If I’m right, I’m right. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong.”
For some excellent “NFL Network on NFL.com” video of what Randy had to say about this whole situation, just click here.
I would tend to believe Randy. I mean, I don’t know what his personal life is like. And I don’t care to. And I don’t know who this woman is or what their relationship is. And again, I really don’t care. But it sounds to me like an accident that Randy is being wrongfully accused for.
The whole thing is just irritating. It takes me back to the mandatory Rookie Symposium, where incoming NFL players are lectured about the seriousness of who they spend their time with (among other things). As an NFL player who has “something” (fame or money), you really have to be careful who you hang out with because there’s always someone lurking, trying to find a way to take it from you for whatever reason. The odd thing is, Randy has known this woman for 11 years so he ought to know who he’s dealing with. At least that’s what one would assume. But she recently asked for “six figures” for what Randy said was an accident in which she claimed to be hurt.
The Florida radio station that reported the incident is probably just out for some much-needed publicity. At the expense of others, no less. The pathetic coverage started with: “One of NFL’s top athletes is back in trouble again.” It was so annoying listening to her speed-read her way through this “report.” I didn’t include a link here because they don’t deserve it.
Anyway, no criminal charges have been filed in the case. It’s a sad state of affairs. Watching American Idol is proof enough that there are insane people among us. I hope they find a nice, safe place for this woman to live. Someplace she can’t bother Randy. Or the rest of us. And I hope this radio station can find some real news to report on.
