Happy Memorial Day, everyone. The term “hero” is tossed around a lot in professional sports, but the ultimate heroes are those who fight for our freedom as citizens of the United States, the freedom we sometimes take for granted. Check out the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s “Wartime Heroes” dedication page where former NFL players, coaches, and team personnel killed in World War II and the Vietnam War are listed. World War II claimed the lives of 23 NFL men — 21 active or former players, an ex-head coach and a team executive. Two former players — Bob Kalsu (Bills) and Don Steinbrunner (Browns) died while serving their country in Vietnam. And former Arizona Cardinals’ safety Pat Tillman was killed in action in Afghanistan. He is the first member of the NFL community to be a war casualty since Vietnam.
