The Dallas Morning News is reporting that the Dallas Cowboys have held preliminary discussions with the Tennessee Titans about trading for suspended cornerback Pacman Jones. The trade could revolve around Dallas giving up a late round pick in exchange for Pacman, but Tennessee officials apparently are not in a hurry to make that deal. They do realize, however, that the best way to move on from the “Pacman era” in Tennessee is to make a trade or risk getting no compensation for him should they decide not to include him on their 2008 roster. None of this really matters if Pacman isn’t reinstated by Commissioner Roger Goodell, who will review the suspension before training camps open in July.
I could see Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones going in this direction. He has a history of welcoming “troubled” players because all he really wants to do is win football games. And that’s fine but in the process, he’s sometimes welcoming big headaches. In this particular case, Pacman doesn’t “get it” when it comes to proper human behavior, so I’m guessing there would need to be some kind of wording in the contract to prohibit any sort of foolishness, on or off the field. Pacman’s a talented cornerback and kick returner, for sure. He has the potential to be one of the NFL’s best playmakers. But he’s screwed himself out of hundreds of thousands of dollars — maybe millions of dollars — in salary, bonuses and endorsement possibilities because of his own stupidity. I just don’t think the potential headaches warrant the risk of dealing with the guy. When you’ve got a lot of cash to throw around, though, it becomes a very viable option and I won’t be surprised to see Dallas go after him sometime before the NFL Draft in late April.

Check out what others are saying about this post...[...] A few days ago, I said the Dallas Cowboys were interested in Tennessee Titans CB/KR Pacman Jones. Well, the feeling is mutual. Pacman appeared on Michael Irvin’s ESPN radio show today amid speculation he could become the Cowboys’ next reclamation project. Pacman said, in-part: “I’m not sitting here telling you I don’t own up to mistakes I’ve made. I accept everything, the punishment, everything that comes along with the bad decisions and bad choices I’ve made. In the end, I just pray to God I get a second chance ….. It’s like I’m on a cliff right now. Any slip-up and I’m off the cliff ….. This (Dallas) is where I want to be, and I hope it’ll work out in the long run and it’ll happen real quick. It’s obvious Jerry does give people a second chance. He has a great heart. Hopefully, I can get one of those second chances.” [...]

[...] Dallas’ interest in acquiring Pacman Jones first surfaced a little over a month ago. When it’s a done deal, the Titans wash their hands of Pacman’s past and the Cowboys take their chances with one of the most talented, yet troubled, players in the National Football League. If Pacman is reinstated prior to training camp (which I am quite certain he will be if he stays out of trouble), he’ll have a tremendous opportunity to resurrect his career as a starting cornerback and kick returner for the Cowboys.
