Brett Favre: ‘At This Time, I am Retired’

Brett Favre was given his requested release from the N.Y. Jets yesterday, thus officially removing him from the team’s roster and making him an eligible free agent once again. Well, sort of. This is where it gets a little complicated. Or, at least I can help make it complicated. It’s what I do.
In a statement released by his agent Bus Cook, Brett said:
“Nothing has changed. At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football.”

No Decision Yet on Brett Favre Reinstatement

As I mentioned in the comments to yesterday’s post about Brett Favre filing his income tax reinstatement paperwork, Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy flew to Brett’s home in Mississippi to try to talk him out of returning to the team. Unfortunately, neither Brett nor Mark spoke with the media about the meeting afterwards. Brett’s agent, Bus Cook, only said that things “were going well,” whatever that means. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell did not make a decision on Brett’s reinstatement today. League spokesman Greg Aiello made the following announcement, though:

According to an SI.com report today, Brett Favre does indeed want to play football in 2008. And within the next ten days, Brett’s agent, Bus Cook, is expected to send a letter to the Green Bay Packers stating that Brett wants off the National Football League’s reserve/retired list. At that point, the Packers will have no choice but to re-admit Brett. The only problem is, the team doesn’t want to do this because they would be taking a $12.8-million cap hit in the process.
