Jets yesterday, thus officially removing him from the team’s roster and making him an eligible free agent once again. Well, sort of. This is where it gets a little complicated. Or, at least I can help make it complicated. It’s what I do.

Brett Favre / Photo: Newscom

In a statement released by his agent Bus Cook, Brett said:

“Nothing has changed. At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football.”

Hmmm. Naturally, the part of his statement that reads “at this time” intrigues those of us who want to see Brett play some more football — even if and maybe especially because of the way last season ended with the Jets. That can’t be the way Brett Favre leaves the National Football League, can it? The last five weeks of the 2009 season, Brett only had two touchdown passes to nine interceptions and a dismal 55.2 passer rating.

Of course, all of this is merely speculation but it brings to mind last year’s debacle of an “unretirement” saga. It also raises the serious question of whether Brett is really going to stay retired. I do believe that “at this time” Brett does not want to return to the game. But give him a month or two and a fully healed torn biceps tendon and perhaps he’ll be singing a different tune. After all, he has friends in Minnesota who many believe are just a quarterback away from being a Super Bowl contender. The Vikings would love to coerce Brett out of retirement to give their team that shot. And so, another “Brett Favre Watch” begins.

As I mentioned in the comments to yesterday’s post about Brett Favre filing his <s>income tax</s> reinstatement paperwork, Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy flew to Brett’s home in Mississippi to try to talk him out of returning to the team. Unfortunately, neither Brett nor Mark spoke with the media about the meeting afterwards. Brett’s agent, Bus Cook, only said that things “were going well,” whatever that means. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell did not make a decision on Brett’s reinstatement today. League spokesman Greg Aiello made the following announcement, though:

“The commissioner is taking no action today. He wants to give both the Packers and Brett an appropriate amount of time to make decisions, including decisions impacting the team’s roster and salary cap. When Brett is reinstated, we will announce it.”

You’ll notice he said “when” Brett is reinstated. That’s a mere formality. But, the whole world will announce this event. This ongoing “unretirement” saga continues to amaze me. Speculation among sports fans everywhere is rampant. I was at a Finish Line store tonight talking about it with several employees. And upon entering a Foot Locker a few minutes later, you can guess what the conversation was about. Then I hopped in my Jeep, turned on ESPN Radio and there it was again. Until tomorrow…

Blogcasting the National Football League, Blogcasting the NFL
According to an SI.com report today, Brett Favre does indeed want to play football in 2008. And within the next ten days, Brett’s agent, Bus Cook, is expected to send a letter to the Green Bay Packers stating that Brett wants off the National Football League’s reserve/retired list. At that point, the Packers will have no choice but to re-admit Brett. The only problem is, the team doesn’t want to do this because they would be taking a $12.8-million cap hit in the process.

Their only other options would be to trade or release the man who has been the face of their franchise for 16 years.

What to do? The drama runs deep in this situation. Apparently, Brett feels he made the wrong decision to retire back in March and now wants to play again. Unfortunately, the Packers have prepared Aaron Rodgers for the starting spot and his patience of opportunity is running thin. As a team, the Packers have moved beyond the Brett Favre era and are struggling to accept the idea of his return even though he might give them their best opportunity to get to the Super Bowl in 2008.

I can’t believe the scenario is playing out this way, but can you imagine Brett in a uniform other than the green and gold of the Packers? I can’t. How well would he step into an entirely new system at the start of training camp? It’s almost unfathomable. I have to think the Packers will somehow find a way to “make it work.” But, quarterback needy teams (Vikings, Bears, 49ers, Panthers, Chiefs, Ravens, etc.) get ready. You might be in the running for one of the greatest QBs of all-time — coming off one of his best seasons.
