He changed his last name last year. But that wasn’t the real transformation. Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco has, in a sense, reinvented himself again. And in the process, he has not only earned a new legion of fans and friends (over 250,000 Twitter followers and counting), he has also wisely positioned himself for a huge payday when his six-year, $35.5 million contract runs out after the 2011 season. That is, if the Bengals want to pay him the whopping $9.3M he’s set to make in 2011. If they don’t exercise that 2011 option, they’ll “only” have to pay him $3.5 million. And then he’ll go somewhere else where he’s sure to make a bundle on top of that because he’s not only a star on the field, he’s managed to become one off of it as well. Please, read on…

Chad Ochocinco, Cincinnati Bengals / Image: Zuma Press

If you’ll recall, last year (and the year before), Chad was attempting to kick and scream his way out of Cincinnati. But when he realized he was taking the wrong path to get what he ultimately wanted, he changed his ways and became exactly the type of <s>person</s> employee he needed to become to achieve the kind of success he truly desired.

Utilizing social media giants Twitter and Ustream, Chad has been at the forefront of Web 2.0 player-fan relations. The guy does what no other athlete is doing. Or will probably dare to do. He advertises when and where he’s going to be—not so fans can watch him from a distance, but so they can hang out with him—whether he’s going out to dinner to celebrate a win in downtown Cincy; or flying to South Beach before a Monday Night Football game. Chad not only wants to meet his fans, he wants to break bread with them and maybe even take them to the movies. And those are just a couple examples.

Chad’s also been known to fly fans to Cincinnati for home game weekend excursions. Some might call it a little bit crazy. I call it genius. And if it’s genuine, pretty darn nice, too. I mean, when the Bengals were granted a one day extension (by the NFL) yesterday to sell 3,000 remaining tickets (thus avoiding a local television blackout), who do you think stepped to the plate to buy those tickets? You guessed it—the self-proclaimed Oprah Winfrey of the National Football League. Chad partnered with Motorola to buy up the seats that would otherwise keep area fans who aren’t at the stadium from seeing the game on local TV.

You gotta give the guy credit. While at one time appearing to be just another spoiled, crybaby, diva receiver, Chad has become exactly the kind of player the NFL will single out in promoting its best case player-fan relationships. As the league looks into the future, their continued (even increased) popularity will certainly be enhanced by players who put forth even half the public relations effort that Chad Ochocinco does.

Chad Greenway's pink cleats / Photo courtesy Minnesota Vikings

Chad was humbled that wearing pink cleats could mean so much:

“I think the purple and pink will clash. But we’ll make it work ….. It’s something our family has battled through, with my grandmother. We watched her battle, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to take the lead on it. I was excited for the chance, because there’s only a few guys on each team that get a chance to do that. And to be chosen, for whatever reason, was a great privilege. You can’t talk to anybody who hasn’t been affected by some form of cancer. For every survivor, and every person who is battling it, it’s more than just a color.”

Now, these certainly aren’t the only players who plan to wear pink equipment this month. All 32 teams have reps ready to support the cause. But as long as we’re pumping players named Chad wearing pink cleats, check out Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco’s pink wardrobe plans on his Twitpic. He’s going with pink wristbands as well as a chin strap and mouthpiece, too. Pretty awesome stuff, Chads.

The National Football League and its players will support October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with its largest on-field presence and a national screening-reminder campaign. In collaboration with the American Cancer Society, the initiative, called “A Crucial Catch: Annual Screening Saves Lives,” encourages annual mammograms for women over 40.

NFL Supports Breast Cancer Awareness / Photo courtesy NFL

Beginning on October 4 and continuing throughout the month, NFL Breast Cancer Awareness games will feature:

Players wearing pink cleats, wristbands, gloves, sideline caps, helmet decals, captains’ patches, sideline towels and quarterback towels

Pink sideline caps for coaches and sideline personnel and pink ribbon pins for coaches and team executives

On-field pink ribbon stencils and Crucial Catch wall banners

Pink goal post padding in end zones

K-balls with pink ribbon decals

Pink coins used for coin toss

Crucial Catch pink rally towels for all fans attending Sunday Night and Monday Night Football games on October 4-5

Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco plans on taking the pink (which should clash with Bengals orange, mind you) to a new level. Yesterday, he three-tweeted:

“I’ll be wearing all pink gloves, shoes and wrist bands in support of breast cancer awareness throughout the Month of October. Oh and as for getting fined I probably will because my entire shoe is pink, gloves are all pink and wrist bands I’ll match the fine n donate. NFL is supporting the pink<_ I went a step further by having everything pink I’m wearing, mouth piece and chin strap too.”

Game-worn pink merchandise and K-balls will be autographed post-game and auctioned off at NFL Auction (www.NFLAuction.NFL.com), with proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society and team charities. Special pink merchandise will be available at www.NFLShop.com and in stadium retail stores, with a portion of proceeds going to breast cancer charities.

NFL Supports Breast Cancer Awareness / Photo courtesy NFL

In addition, members of the NFL Referees’ Association will donate a portion of their game pay to breast cancer charities in October. Their donations will total $24,000. Officials will don pink-accented caps and pins for games throughout October.

As national spokespersons for the Crucial Catch campaign, both Tanya Snyder, wife of Redskins owner Dan Snyder, and Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald are working on a cause that hits close to home.

For Mrs. Snyder, a longtime breast cancer fundraiser, the connection to breast cancer is a personal one. “Breast cancer affects one in eight American women and I was one of them last year,” she said. “I am proud to work with the league and the Redskins to remind fans about the importance of annual screenings.”

Larry lost his mother to breast cancer in college and has since devoted his time to breast cancer fundraising opportunities. “The Crucial Catch initiative reminds us all how important it is to take care of the women in our lives,” he said. “I hope to keep my mother’s legacy alive by taking part in this campaign.”

NFL Supports Breast Cancer Awareness / Photo courtesy NFL

From cleats to gloves, towels to caps, NFL partners including Nike, Reebok, adidas, Gatorade, Wilson, Under Armour, Cutters Gloves and McArthur Towel and Sports are creating pink merchandise for breast cancer awareness games. Many NFL licensees also will create special pink product, with a portion of proceeds benefitting breast cancer charities. In addition to creating pink sideline towels for players, Gatorade will produce 1.9 million pink ribbon bottles, on sale at retail stores throughout October; Gatorade sideline carts will feature pink ribbon decals during October. Trading card companies Panini, Topps, and Upper Deck will produce special pink trading cards featuring facts on breast cancer awareness; they will be available, free of charge with purchase, at stadium retail stores.

Fans can visit www.NFL.com/pink to learn more about breast cancer detection and prevention tips.

Many teams will extend the national platform with local efforts, including the distribution of 400,000 pink ribbons facilitated by volunteers from Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) sorority. Teams will designate home games in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and plan special in-stadium or pregame events with local organizations. Team events include:

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals will partner with the American Cancer Society for their October 11 breast cancer awareness game, where they will recognize survivors by including them in game day activities and featuring their survivor stories during the game via video. At the October 11 game, Williams Warriors members will run on-field for a check presentation, which will feature DeAngelo’s mother, and the team will distribute 20,000 Think Pink ribbons to fans in partnership with ZTA. TopCats cheerleaders will use pink pom poms.

Chicago Bears

Bears Care, the charitable beneficiary of the Chicago Bears, has been selling Real Bears Fans Wear Pink t-shirts during September, with proceeds benefitting breast cancer charities. Fans will wear the t-shirts to the October 4 game. A breast cancer survivor finishing her treatment the Friday before the game will be honored on-field. Representatives from Wilson and NorthShore University Health Systems will participate in a pregame ceremony to recognize their support of breast cancer research. Also on October 4, 7-11 will be handing out pink ribbon decal tote bags to the first 40,000 fans to enter Soldier Field. Volunteers from ZTA also will be handing out pink ribbons to fans attending the game.

The Bengals will make an on-field, pregame presentation of the Marvin Lewis Community Fund’s Breast Cancer Survivor of the Year Award. The award winner will deliver the coin to game officials for the coin toss. All will occur at the October 25 game.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns will partner with ACS and ZTA at their October 4 game. ZTA will hand out 20,000 pink ribbons and a Browns Women’s Organization (BWO) gate collection will benefit ACS. Members of the BWO are decorating commemorative jerseys that will be auctioned off in support of ACS. Breast cancer survivors will participate in the coin toss and will help with presentation of the Browns Spirit Flag during the pregame festivities. Several members of the Browns organization participated in the Race for the Cure in recent weeks.

Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys employees will take part in a Dallas Race for the Cure event on October 17. Bradie James and former First Lady Laura Bush will serve as honorary chairs for the race.

Denver Broncos

Partnering with Susan G. Komen, the Broncos will host breast cancer survivors on-field at halftime during their October 4 game. The Broncos will field a ‘celebrity’ team for their local Race for the Cure on October 4, lead by Broncos Cheerleaders. A large pink bow will be on the stadium throughout October. The team also will donate $10,000 to their Susan G. Komen chapter in the name of local breast cancer survivors.

Detroit Lions

The Lions are sponsoring the ACS’s local Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event on October 10, the day before their breast cancer awareness game. Captained by breast cancer survivor Jennifer Arapoff, a group of Lions employees will walk in the event. The team also will partner with ZTA to distribute breast cancer pins at the October 11 game. Pre-game ceremonies will include breast cancer survivors from the Lions, ZTA and the ACS. Survivors will form a tunnel for players during introductions. Lions’ Ladies (players and coaches wives and staff) will wear pink Lions’ t-shirts to the game.

Green Bay Packers

The Packers are using their halftime show to focus on breast cancer awareness. Local Oneida dancers will wear pink hats and perform a healing dance and survivors will hold large pin ribbons on the field. Packers cheerleaders will use pink pom-poms. In partnership with ZTA, volunteers will hand out pink ribbons in the parking lot.

Houston Texans

Texans cheerleaders, wives of players and coaches, and staff members will participate in their local Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Video footage of this event will play for fans in-stadium during the October 4 breast cancer awareness game. The team will feature Reggie Nelson in their game day program. Reggie lost his mother to breast cancer and hosts a breast cancer fundraiser each year.

Kansas City Chiefs

Tavia Hunt will lead the Chiefs Women’s Organization to distribute free pink ribbon buttons to fans as they enter Arrowhead Stadium. Breast cancer survivors will serve as Honorary Co-Captains at the game and take part in the coin toss alongside Chiefs players. The Chiefs will also deem their halftime show “A Tribute to Breast Cancer Survivors” and will feature a performance by pink-clad members of Jazzercise. The show’s performers have raised money in order to participate that will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Miami Dolphins

Yesterday, Chad spent a mere two tweets announcing:

“Due to the many rules the NFL has made I’ve found it difficult to enjoy Twitter and I’ll be deleting my account I thank and love you all for following, hope you enjoyed getting to know the real me: Esteban out.”

As of this post, the account is still open but there are no signs of Twitter “unretirement” from Chad. I’m sure he’s been inundated with responses. I find it hard to believe he’s going to simply quit this popular association with his fans. He’s not the type to give up this easily. I believe Chad’s working on a new way to annoy the league with Twitter—a unique way around the rules that no one else has even thought of yet.

The policy was officially announced yesterday.

NFL Statement Regarding Use of Social Media / Photo: Newscom

NFL Statement Regarding Use of Social Media

The NFL informed clubs today that coaches, players and football operations personnel are permitted under league policy and with club permission to use social media on game day during specific time periods before and after games.

League policy allows for the use of social media or networking sites (including Twitter and Facebook) by players, coaches and football operations personnel up to 90 minutes before kickoff and after the game following media interviews.

The use of these sites by these individuals is not permitted during the game, including halftime. No updates are permitted to be posted by the individual himself or anyone representing him during this prohibited time on his personal Twitter, Facebook or any other social media account.

The use of social media by NFL game officials and officiating department personnel is prohibited at any time.

Longstanding policies prohibiting play-by-play descriptions of NFL games in progress apply fully to Twitter and other social media platforms. Internet sites may not post detailed information that approximates play-by-play during a game. While a game is in progress, any forms of accounts of the game must be sufficiently time-delayed and limited in amount (e.g., score updates with detail given only in quarterly game updates) so that the accredited organization’s game coverage cannot be used as a substitute for, or otherwise approximate, authorized play-by-play accounts.

Any use of social media during games by the public relations or website staff on an official club platform must be consistent with the play-by-play policy described above.

The NFL’s security department has been successful assisting players in removing fake sites on Facebook and Twitter. Players or other NFL employees who believe they are victims of identity theft by people impersonating them on social media sites are advised to contact the NFL’s security department.

The growth of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook has created important new ways for the NFL and clubs to communicate and connect with fans. The NFL has been at the forefront of the use of new media and will continue to emphasize innovative and appropriate use of these new forms of communication.

Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco is probably the most popular NFL <s>abuser</s> user of social media (Twitter, UStream). His thoughts? “Well there won’t be any tweeting during the game, o well, plan B: anybody have info on how to get in touch with a Mariachi Band?”

Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco reported via Twitter that the deal was done yesterday, but it took a few more hours of fine-tuning between Alvin Keels (Andre’s agent) and Bengals officials today to make it happen for real. Andre is expected to take over the right tackle spot but he’s got a lot of catching up to do. My guess is that this extended layoff will greatly reduce his chances of thriving at the position anytime soon.

Child, please. A preseason fine? Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocino thrives on game day (and new this season, online) controversy. And finding ways around the rules. But the National Football League has most likely hired one person specifically to watch Chad throughout the 2009 season, so there’s little chance he’ll get away with anything.

Chad Ochocinco, Cincinnati Bengals / Photo: Newscom

Such was the case today as the league fined Chad $5,000 for wearing an orange chinstrap (instead of standard issue black) a couple nights ago in a 24-21 loss to the St. Louis Rams. And Chad is none too pleased with losing, as he put it, his “McDonalds money for the month of September.” He plans to fight back but he won’t win that fight. He’s waging a losing battle and he knows it. When he files his taxes next year, these fines should be listed as an entertainment expense for him. Because I think he enjoys the attention.

According to Chad’s Twitter:

WTF I got a damn fine already, it’s the damn preseason, this is some bull****!!!! Im sueing the NFL, I am color blind so this fine is discriminating because I’m disabled in a way, this is a sad day for me:(

Apparently, Chad has budgeted a chunk of fine money for what he anticipates to be an expensive season. What he really needs, for convenience sake, is an official NFL Fine Debit Card that auto reloads after each incident. That will save Chad the time of mailing payments for all his nonsense.

When Twitter wasn’t enough for Chad Ochocinco to express himself, he started his own Ustream show to take the power of the press into his own hands. And I have to admit, it’s a great idea. If you want to hear it straight from Chad’s mouth and not the media’s, check it out. While it’s not something I could sit and watch for very long, it is better than half the “reality” shows on TV.

He said no tweeting not twitt pics, lol Ocho and The Boss himself

Chad has his computer at Bengals training camp and when he’s not in meetings or practice, he’s jawing on The Ocho Cinco Show, which so far has been drawing around 1,400 viewers at one time. Topics range from relationship advice to answering random chat questions about himself and football. He also makes calls to celeb friends like Warren Sapp, Lil Wayne and agent Drew Rosenhaus, to name a few.

You get an interesting insider look at what life at training camp is like—well, at least from his dorm room at Georgetown College. One example: he enjoyed (ok, made fun of) the team’s late night snack of chicken wings and carrot sticks before starting tonight’s episode. And when one of his coaches made the rounds to ensure all the players were in their rooms (a $9,000 fine if they’re not), Chad was busy Ustreaming. There is no set schedule, but he usually posts something on his Twitter when he’s about to go live. Check it out if you can’t think of anything else to do with your time.

I don’t know why I continue to pay attention to Chad Ochocinco. Probably because he’s interesting to observe while he sometimes makes a fool of himself. The guy is kind of funny. And entertaining. I’ll give him that. And now that he’s apparently done whining and complaining to the media about being traded from the Cincinnati Bengals, he’s found a new way to “express” himself—to the 54,000+ followers on his Twitter account. Today, Chad tweeted his intentions to disobey whatever in-game anti-Twitter policy the National Football League eventually comes up with.

Rocky Patel vintage 1992 on Twitpic

Amidst basketball challenges to Terrell Owens and jawing with “haters” over the past 24 hours, he said (and these are his unedited tweets):

God said to honor thy mother and thy father, no where in the ten commandments does it say NFL!!

@Jeff420Smith they do pay my bills huh? Damn, good point, NFL’er kicked out of the league for having to much fun!!! Child Please

He also let loose on 710 ESPN (or SportsFanLive’s eavesdrop), saying:

“There’s a lot of things they don’t want me to do. I do it anyway. They know that. I don’t know why they even fussing about it … When I say I’m going to do something, I’m going to do it, regardless of what they say.”

You can be sure Roger Goodell has a watchdog all over Chad’s tweets. So, ultimately Chad will do what the NFL tells him to do or he’ll be fined and possibly suspended. And he might eventually be an “NFL’er kicked out of the league for having to much fun!!!”
