Trent Green Should Retire After Diagnosis Reveals Grade Three Concussion

To follow-up yesterday’s report on Trent Green’s concussion, he was diagnosed today with a Grade Three, the worst type. He’ll undergo further testing before deciding his future, but at his age (37-years-old), with an 0-5 team and a young family at home, I can’t imagine why he would want to risk permanent brain damage by taking the field again. I really believe Trent should retire and enjoy the financial freedom his NFL career has provided him. No pun intended but … this is a no-brainer, Trent.
NFL Outlines Standards for Concussion Management

I was watching Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO the other night and there was a segment on post-concussion syndrome in the NFL (Episode 122, Story 1, Head On) that caught my attention. The preview at HBO.com read:

Commissioner Targets Concussions

Commissioner Goodell has ordered that medical personnel (doctors and trainers) from each NFL team must attend a meeting on concussions next month in Chicago. The Commissioner announced last week that baseline neuropsychological tests will be mandatory for the 2007 season. That means all players will be required to take a test determining cognitive abilities, memory and motor skills before the start of the 2007 season. That way, if a player has a concussion, he can be tested to determine what neurological changes have taken place.
