But during the past three weeks, they’ve failed to back up that talk with three straight defeats. After yesterday’s 16-13 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills, it will be even harder to keep that swagger because it was announced that four-time Pro Bowl nose tackle Kris Jenkins will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee.

<img class="size-full wp-image-7887" src="http://www.everyjoe.com/emqb/files/2009/10/20081130_zaf_cs7_064-Kris-Jenkins.jpg" alt="Kris Jenkins, N.Y.
This is a devastating loss for the Jets’ defensive line. They certainly won’t be able to replace Kris with Sione Pouha or Howard Green. So they’ll have to make due for the remainder of the 2009 season. But Kris anticipates a full recovery and return to the Jets in 2010. And who can argue with him? He tore the ACL in his right knee when he was with the Carolina Panthers four years ago. He not only made a full recovery from that injury, he also went to the Pro Bowl the following season.

The Jets seemed determined to get things moving in the right direction by going on a shopping spree. They’ve already spent over $120 million with the additions of OL Alan Faneca (Steelers); FB Tony Richardson (Vikings); DT Kris Jenkins (Panthers, via trade); OL Damien Woody (Lions); LB Calvin Pace (Cards); and sleeper RB Jesse Chatman (Miami). Alan and Tony were All-Pros last season. In my opinion, both are the best at their positions. Calvin will be a monster in the Jets’ 3-4 scheme. And Jesse might produce better numbers than Michael Turner in Atlanta in ‘08. I compare the two because both were backups awaiting starting roles. His 124 rushing yards against the Bills and 10.4 ypc against the Pats (both in losses) last season were not flukes.
