Yesterday, I wrote about the New Orleans Saints signing 12-year veteran safety Darren Sharper and revamping their defense. Today, much to my surprise, the team released one of their best defensive players — 10-year veteran cornerback Mike McKenzie. Mike played five seasons with the Saints after coming over from Green Bay in 2004. He started all but one of the 63 games he played in and had 225 tackles, 58 passes defensed, 12 interceptions and one forced fumble. New Orleans Saints DE Will Smith signed a whopping seven-year, $63 million contract extension yesterday that will make him one of the NFL’s highest-paid defensive players. The guaranteed money is at $25 million. Upon completing the deal, Saints GM Mickey Loomis said:
“We are excited about getting this long-term contract done with Will. We view him as one of our core players and look forward to him having an impact on our defense for years to come.”
