This was sort of an unusual appointment, but it’s the second such NFL head coach hiring in the past month. Seattle Seahawks defensive assistant Jim Mora Jr. was named the team’s new head coach — in 2009! That’s right, Coach Mora will continue to serve as defensive assistant while current head coach Mike Holmgren returns for one more season. Mike Holmgren Remains Coach of Seahawks

First, Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy said he was coming back. Now, Seattle Seahawks head coach and GM Mike Holmgren has decided to complete the final year of his contract before resigning in 2009. This is good news for Seahawks fans. During his nine years in Seattle, Coach Holmgren has compiled an 86-68 record and guided the Seahawks to five division titles. During his announcement presser yesterday he said:

NFL Playoffs Begin With Wild Card Weekend

The NFL playoffs begin today and tomorrow with Wild Card Weekend. This afternoon, the Washington Redskins play at the Seattle Seahawks (NBC, 4:30 PM ET) and this evening, the Jacksonville Jaguars visit the Pittsburgh Steelers (NBC, 8:00 PM ET). Wild Card Weekend continues tomorrow with the New York Giants at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (FOX, 1:00 PM ET) and the Tennessee Titans traveling to face the San Diego Chargers (CBS, 4:30 PM ET).
