Less than a month after he was reinstated by the NFL following a two-year suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse and personal conduct policies, Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman failed to show up for the team’s OTAs. So, he was given his walking papers today.

Less than a month after he was reinstated by the NFL following a two-year suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse and personal conduct policies, Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman failed to show up for the team’s OTAs. So, he was given his walking papers today.

I was curious as to why he missed the time with the Bengals and as it turns out, he was dealing with the death of his grandmother (who raised him). So, I want to give him the benefit of the doubt here. Plus, this particular workout was voluntary, so the team really could’ve cut him some slack under the circumstances. I’m just wondering what kind of dialogue took place between Odell and the Bengals? Certainly, the team could’ve been more understanding in this situation, but I can also appreciate their frustration with his continued absence. Nevertheless, just when Odell was in a position to resurrect his career and get caught-up with the team that stood behind him during his suspension, he’s out of a job. It’s a shame, too. The guy had so much promise entering the league. In his first season (2005), he led the Bengals in tackles and led all NFL rookies with five interceptions. He was one of four finalists for NFL Rookie-of-the-Year. Hopefully he can pick up with another team and put his troubled past behind him. I guarantee his phone is ringing right now.
