The Dallas Cowboys acquired Detroit Lions Pro Bowl receiver Roy Williams just before the National Football League’s 4 p.m. ET trade deadline this afternoon.
National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast

The Dallas Cowboys acquired Detroit Lions Pro Bowl receiver Roy Williams just before the National Football League’s 4 p.m. ET trade deadline this afternoon. In return, the Lions get first, third and sixth round selections from the Cowboys in next year’s NFL Draft. Roy’s deal is set for five years. The financial terms of the agreement have not yet been disclosed.

After a rash of injuries to key players recently, this is the first good news the Cowboys have had in a while. In the quote of the day, Roy (who played college ball at the University of Texas) said he was “more happy to be a Dallas Cowboy than when I got my first bike.” Nice. Owner Jerry Jones, still attempting to recover from today’s Adam “Pacman” Jones suspension, was (almost) equally as excited:

“We got two guys out there that can really run, they’re big, but as you know, both of them can really make spectacular catches.”

What an impressive duo of receivers the Cowboys now have. Opposite Terrell Owens, Dallas has arguably the second best tandem in the National Football League (Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin are still tops). So, it appears the most talented team in football just got better. When everyone is healthy, this offense — at least on paper — appears unstoppable.

This trade, however, was pretty clearly an act of desperation for the Cowboys. Jerry Jones made a financial commitment to win the Super Bowl this past offseason, but with the team at 4-2 and hurting from an influx of injuries, giving up three Draft picks for the talented Roy Williams was a stretch. I feel it was necessary, though. Even at 100 percent, the team needed a better receiver than Patrick Crayton opposite T.O. Roy Williams is that receiver.

With the NFL’s trade deadline fast approaching (October 14), one potential deal that is gaining momentum is Kansas City Chiefs perennial All-Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez to the N.Y. Giants. It makes sense. Tony’s not getting any younger. He’s done his time in K.C. and it’s fairly evident the schizophrenic Chiefs are in a rebuilding mode (although Chiefs offensive lineman Adrian Jones and I discussed this as kind of bogus last week). The Giants could use a TE and red zone threat to replace Jeremy Shockey (who was traded to New Orleans, of course) because [...]
Post from: Every Morning Quarterback

With the NFL’s trade deadline fast approaching (October 14), one potential deal that is gaining momentum is Kansas City Chiefs perennial All-Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez to the N.Y. Giants. It makes sense. Tony’s not getting any younger. He’s done his time in K.C. and it’s fairly evident the schizophrenic Chiefs are in a rebuilding mode (although Chiefs offensive lineman Adrian Jones and I discussed this as kind of bogus last week). The Giants could use a TE and red zone threat to replace Jeremy Shockey (who was traded to New Orleans, of course) because they haven’t gotten much from the position so far this season. Kevin Boss has five catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. Further down the depth chart, TEs Michael Matthews and Darcy Johnson haven’t registered any stats.

Would Chiefs President/GM/CEO Carl Peterson go for it? I think so. He and Tony are pretty close so I think he would be more apt to do what’s right for Tony’s career. Of course, he’ll make sure the Chiefs are properly compensated. If the Giants are serious about making another title run, it could happen. Shall we say a second- and a fifth-round Draft pick in 2009?

The Miami Dolphins have traded WR Chris Chambers to the San Diego Chargers for a 2nd Round Draft pick in 2008.

Blogging the National Football League, Blogging the NFL

The Miami Dolphins have traded WR Chris Chambers to the San Diego Chargers for a 2nd Round Draft pick in 2008. With the NFL’s trading deadline today, I just confirmed the deal in a phone call with the Dolphins Media Relations Department. Chris is a seven-year veteran who has a history with Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner. In 2002 and 2003, Chris’ second and third seasons in the NFL, Coach Turner was Miami’s offensive coordinator. Chris caught 52 passes for 734 yards and three touchdowns in his first year with Coach T. In 2003, he had a breakout season while working with Coach Turner. That year he caught 64 passes for 963 yards and 11 touchdowns.

I believe Chris will contribute immediately due to his knowledge of the team’s offense. In addition to working with Coach Turner in the past, Chris has spent the last six months working in Cam Cameron’s offense, the same system that Coach T. runs and the same one that is still in place from Coach Cam’s tenure as the Bolts’ OC. Coach Turner had this statement about the addition of C2:

“Chris is an explosive, talented player and I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to work with him again. He’s a very consistent player and he has big-play ability. We think he can add to what we’re doing on offense. The bonus for us is that he’s familiar with the system. It should be a quick and easy adjustment for him. We expect him to come in and be productive right away.”
