Matt Jones Suspended

National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast
It’s been a really bad season for the Jacksonville Jags. Not only are they playing some of the worst football in their recent history, the Jags are a mess off-the-field as well. Most troubling was when offensive lineman Richard Collier was tragically shot, taking his leg and ending his pro football career. That’s enough to ruin any team’s season. Now, Jag’s top receiver Matt Jones (65 catches, 761 yards, two touchdowns) has been officially suspended by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Head coach Jack Del Rio issued the following brief statement …read more

Richard Collier on ‘Outside the Lines’

National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast
Here’s a great story on former Jacksonville Jags offensive lineman Richard Collier that was on ESPN’s Outside the Lines yesterday morning. I realize he lost a leg in this terrible crime, but because of the adversity he’s already been through in his life, I believe “Big Rich” will find a way to walk again.

NFL Players Are Still Living Scared

National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast
A year after Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor’s death, NFL players are still living scared. And with good reason. There’s an interesting article in the 11.24 Dec 01 2008 ESPN Magazine that features seven current NFL players discussing their own concerns and experiences with crime and the issue of safety in their own lives — Clinton Portis, Ben Roethlisberger, Dunta Robinson, Kevin Mawae, Derrick Brooks, Branden Albert and Fred Taylor. In the “special report,” ESPN senior writer David Fleming writes:
“When asked about their fears, players cite the same frightening flashpoints: New Year’s Day 2007, when …read more

Richard Collier Paralyzed After Shooting

National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast
To follow-up my September 2 post on the shooting of Jacksonville Jags offensive tackle Richard Collier, the news is not good. Richard is paralyzed from the waist down and he had his left leg amputated. Jags head coach Jack Del Rio reacted upon hearing the news yesterday:
“It’s a tragedy this young man was caught up in this violence. It’s a great tragedy for a young man who had such a promising future.”
This comes as a surprise because the media and Richard’s teammates were kept in the dark this past month. His family wanted to make …read more

Jags Richard Collier in Critical Condition

National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast
Jacksonville Jags offensive lineman Richard Collier is in critical but stable condition after he was shot numerous times early this morning. Apparently, he and a former Jacksonville teammate (Kenneth Pettway) were waiting for two women they had met at a nightclub when a gunman fired into the Cadillac Escalade they were in. The motive behind the attack was unknown and the sheriff’s office was investigating. Jags owner Wayne Weaver released the following statement today:
“We’re shocked and deeply saddened by this morning’s news about Richard Collier. We have been informed that Richard has had surgery and …read more
