In yet another example of just how far a star running back can fall from one of the National Football League’s best to not being wanted by any NFL team, Edgerrin James was released by the Seattle Seahawks today. After seven games, he had just 46 carries for a meager 125 yards. Doing some quick math, that’s 2.7 yards per carry.

Edgerrin James released by Seahawks / Image: Zuma Press

As you will recall, Edge was acquired by the Hawks this past August after three years in Arizona, the last of which saw him turn from a disgruntled bench warmer to an integral part of an NFC Championship run. Surprisingly—to Edge—there wasn’t much interest in his services after he was finally released by the Cards a few months ago.

This is a similar scenario to what former Seahawk Shaun Alexander went through—from league MVP in 2005 to out of the same league (after a very brief stint in Washington) in just three years. An injury will open the door for Edge to return to another NFL team. But for all intents and purposes, at 31-years-old, his outstanding, probably Hall of Fame career, is probably over.

Washington’s Lottery launched Seahawks Winning Play Scratch today. It’s the first licensed professional football Scratch ticket available in the country.

Washington’s Lottery partnered with the Seattle Seahawks to offer football fans the opportunity to win big bucks while cheering on their hometown team. The ticket, which features a top prize of $50,000, also features a football fans’ dream trip (details below) in a second chance drawing. The ticket goes on sale today at Lottery retail locations statewide and will be sold at Qwest Field during Seahawks home games. The partnership resulted after a vote from the National Football League allowing teams and lottery groups to align.

The second-chance drawing details are for one lucky player who will win the following:

Two tickets to the Pro Bowl game on Sunday, January 31, 2010

Two tickets to the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 7, 2010

Round-trip coach airfare for two from Seattle to Miami

One double occupancy hotel room for nine nights (I hope they’re either unemployed or employed with a lot of vacation time)

The approximate value of the package is $12,000. Entry deadline is Tuesday, January 12, 2010. And the drawing is on Tuesday, January 19, 2010.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns both gained approval for lottery deals today. They join the Patriots, Redskins, Texans, Ravens and Saints (and Seahawks, of course) so far.

Even with the impressive collection of healthy receivers the Hawks have on staff (T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Nate Burleson, Deion Branch, Deon Butler, Billy McMullen), having a healthy Matt Hasselbeck is the straw that will stir this offensive drink under new offensive coordinator Greg Knapp. And Matt understands this:

“I hope everything’s in. The (play)book is so thick. I think what we’re trying to do now is just really install everything, see what works, see what fits the personnel. And Greg Knapp’s kind of going 100 miles an hour teaching it, coaching it. We’re just trying to learn it, practice it, get so it feels just like second nature.”

Three years ago, the Seattle Seahawks gave linebacker Julian Peterson a seven-year, $54 million contract.
The whole thing is a bit odd as Julian has been to five Pro Bowls and was arguably one of Seattle’s best players. But the Detroit Lions — needy at pretty much every position — were especially interested in stockpiling linebackers and with Julian, they get a player with 46 career sacks and eight career interceptions. As far as Cory is concerned, I don’t really know what to expect from him in Seattle. Sure, the potential is there (he had a career high eight sacks three years ago), but can you really judge his (only) four sacks the past two seasons with the lack of talent that has surrounded him in Detroit?

The Seattle Seahawks won the T.J. Houshmandzadeh sweepstakes today. The receiver-depleted Hawks offered Housh five years for $40 million with $15 million guaranteed and beat out the Vikings and Bengals (be serious) for his services. I think T.J. is definitely worth the money. He’s proven that on the field with 372 receptions over the past four years. No other player has caught more passes. He’s a bigger body receiver than his 6-1, 200 pound frame would indicate. He’s a guy who isn’t afraid of the middle of the field. He catches everything thrown at him.
National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast

He runs good routes. He makes plays. So, he needed to get paid and he did what he felt was best for his career in choosing Seattle. There’s not much in the way of quotes yet, but T.J. did say:

“I just felt it was the best destination, it was the best team, it was the best choice for me.”

Well, obviously. And he might be right. A lot of folks felt Housh should’ve signed with the Vikings as they are supposedly poised to make a Super Bowl run, but I really don’t see it happening based on their offseason moves thus far. The Vikes completely overlooked better available free agent QBs — apparently opting to put their offense in the hands of unproven semi-journeyman quarterback Sage Rosenfels — and haven’t done anything to address their own dire need at the receiver position. At this time, Minnesota still doesn’t have a number one receiver and ultimately I don’t think they’ll be any better than they were last season. If they’re even that good. I would grade their offseason/FA work with an F at this point. As far as the Seahawks are concerned, they have much greater stability at the quarterback position with Matt Hasselbeck. Seattle doesn’t have the running game the Vikings do, but they do have the quarterback. For T.J., it was about more money and a better quarterback. Decisions, decisions. You do the math.

The opponents for all 2009 regular-season games have been determined and a complete list of each team’s home and away matchups was issued yesterday by the NFL. The scheduling formula implemented in 2002 with realignment guarantees that all teams play each other on a regular, rotating basis. Under the formula, every team within a division plays 16 games as follows:

Home and away against its three division opponents (6 games)

The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle (4 games)

The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle (4 games)

Two intraconference games based on the prior year’s standings (2 games). These games match a first-place team against the first-place teams in the two same-conference divisions the team is not scheduled to play that season. The second-place, third-place, and fourth-place teams in a conference are matched in the same way each year.

The official 2009 schedule, with playing dates and times, will be announced in the spring. NFL Kickoff 2009 Weekend will begin on Thursday night, September 10, and the regular season will conclude on January 3. Wild Card Weekend will be Saturday and Sunday, January 9-10; Divisional Playoff games on the weekend of January 16-17; and the AFC and NFC Championship Games on Sunday, January 24. Super Bowl XLIV at Dolphin Stadium in South Florida will be played on Sunday, February 7.

N.Y. Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis was fined $10,000 by the NFL today for throwing snow at fans. After a 13-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks Sunday, happy and maybe drunk Seahawks fans were tossing snowballs at Jets players as they left Qwest Field. Shaun retaliated by throwing a giant chunk of snow back at them. It seemed playful and Shaun said there was no ill intent:
“It was all in fun. It was kind of like a little battlefield out there, so to speak. I mean, it was just all in fun, going to the [...]
Post from: Every Morning Quarterback

After a 13-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks Sunday, happy and maybe drunk Seahawks fans were tossing snowballs at Jets players as they left Qwest Field.

“It was all in fun. It was kind of like a little battlefield out there, so to speak. I mean, it was just all in fun, going to the locker room.”

You would think Shaun would’ve been too depressed to engage fans in a friendly snowball fight. After all, the Jets have lost three of their past four games. Obviously, he should’ve just gotten off the field as quickly as possible like the rest of his teammates. Players are notified before each season that any contact with fans which presents potential crowd-control issues and risk of injury is strictly prohibited. Players are also informed that they must not confront fans during games and must leave any issues to security personnel. That’s great, but fans (obviously) shouldn’t be tossing snowballs at players. Even though the game was over, I wonder how many people were reprimanded or escorted out of the stadium? The Jets should (and probably will) file a formal complaint to the league regarding the behavior of Seattle’s fans. After all, the fans have a conduct policy now as well and I’m pretty sure throwing things at players is on the “don’t do” list. Maybe the PA announcer should have been telling the crowd not to throw things onto the field instead of congratulating them for being the loudest fans in the National Football League.

Forget seconds. How about thirds? That’s the appetizer on the National Football League Thanksgiving menu this Week 13 of the NFL season — three Turkey Day servings of football, followed by a whole lineup of games on Thanksgiving Sunday and Monday. Even the players will be in their easy chairs. Like Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning:

“I remember watching Thanksgiving games as a kid. Even in high school and college, and now in the NFL, you practice, you come home and you watch Thanksgiving football.”

Football has been a part of my Thanksgiving Day for as long as I can remember. Whether I’m relaxing with my family at the Outer Banks of North Carolina or home for the holidays in snowy Pennsylvania (like this year), you can bet we’ll have all three games on — even if in the background during dinner. Thanksgiving Day has always been about family, food and football. I wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving. Here’s what’s on the pigskin platter:

TENNESSEE TITANS at DETROIT LIONS (CBS, 12:30 PM ET): Fans will see two of the top rookie rushers in the league in Tennessee’s Chris Johnson (second among rookie RBs with 833 yards) and Detroit’s Kevin Smith (fourth with 599 yards). Kevin has consecutive games of 96, 112 and 86 yards. The 10-1 Titans are smarting from their first loss to the Jets last week. “It was a great run,” says Tennessee head coach Jeff Fisher. “We’ve got to win our next game.” With a win and an Indianapolis loss, the Titans take the AFC South.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS at DALLAS COWBOYS (FOX, 4:15 PM ET): The final Thanksgiving game in Texas Stadium, where some of the most memorable NFL games on the holiday have been played (Cowboys Thanksgiving record in the stadium: 21-14). The Cowboys look like they’ve regained their early-season swagger. The Seahawks will have to bottle up receiver Terrell Owens, who comes off his second-best career yardage day — 213 yards on seven catches. “He’s still got it,” says Cowboys QB Tony Romo. Whatever.

ARIZONA CARDINALS at PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (NFL Network, 8:00 PM ET): The QBs are riled! And that’s not good for the DBs. The Cards’ Kurt Warner, after Arizona lost to the Giants on Sunday, says, “We can play with anybody if we eliminate the mistakes.” A win and the Cards capture the NFC West. QB Donovan McNabb, benched for the first time in his career Sunday, is still the starter for Philly. “Sometimes you have to step back to step forward in a positive way, and Donovan will do that,” says Eagles coach Andy Reid.
