This is just an incredibly sad and gruesome account of a situation gone terribly wrong. Interviews with friends revealed that a distraught Ms. Kazemi was making payments on two cars, her rent was doubling and she suspected Steve was having a second affair with another young woman. Nashville police chief Ronal Serpas said Ms. Kazemi was “spinning out of control” leading up to the incident:

“We do know that she was clearly sending a message during the last five to seven days of her life that things were going bad quickly.”

Police said a pistol was discovered near the body of a woman, identified as as 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi, who was also shot and killed in a downtown condominium.
Titans owner Bud Adams released the following statement upon hearing the news:

“We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair’s passing today. He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they deal with his untimely passing.”

Police said an autopsy would be performed today that would begin to make sense of exactly what happened yesterday. But as disturbing and sad as the news is in itself, the details—which are still unclear—are beginning to take shape in various media reports. CNN claimed Kazemi was Steve’s girlfriend. The Nashville City Paper reported that Steve’s murder was preceded by a warning that he would be killed. And now The Tennessean is calling the incident an apparent murder-suicide.

Baltimore Ravens QB Steve McNair announced his retirement today, ending an impressive 13-year career in which he was selected co-MVP, led the Tennessee Titans to the Super Bowl, and engineered the most successful regular season in Ravens’ history. Steve ends his career with 31,304 yards passing; 3,590 yards rushing; and a combined 211 touchdowns.

Steve was one of my favorite NFL quarterbacks because of the way he played the game — with passion and intensity. He was always as much a threat to run the ball as he was to pass it. And he was a winner. In his younger years, there were few QBs who could do it better. Coming out of tiny Alcorn State in 1995, Steve became the first black quarterback drafted in the top three
picks. I remember it like it was yesterday. He brought a new excitement to the position.

Steve was fun to watch. My favorite Steve McNair moment was in a November 8, 1998 game against Tampa when he ran through the Bucs defense for 71 yards and a touchdown. It really defined what he could do and the type of threat he was to opposing defenses. But as with any NFL player, especially at his position, the years took their toll and the injuries began to pile up. Nevertheless, you would have a hard time finding a tougher football player.
