Aaron Rodgers Gets Long-Term Deal

National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast
The Green Bay Packers locked up quarterback Aaron Rodgers through the 2014 season today. Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations (wow, that’s a long title) Ted Thompson made the announcement this afternoon:
“As we talked about in the past, we try to be proactive in our discussions with our current players and we felt like this was an appropriate time to try to come to an agreement with Aaron. We feel like this is good for the organization and the players, and we will continue this approach as we move forward.”

Packers, Brett Favre Reach Compromise

Blogcasting the National Football League, Blogcasting the NFL
Brett Favre was planning to attend Green Bay Packers training camp today. But after speaking with general manager Ted Thompson yesterday, the two sides agreed to a compromise — Brett will not show up for camp and management will try to reach some sort of resolution to his unretirement dilemma. Last night from his home in Mississippi, Brett said:
“I had planned on reporting for the start of Packers training camp Sunday, but Ted Thompson asked if I would give him a couple of days to try to get the situation resolved. I agreed …read more

Brett Favre Returns to Lambeau Field

Blogcasting the National Football League, Blogcasting the NFL
Brett Favre returned to Lambeau Field today to honor former center Frank Winters’ induction into the Green Bay Packers’ Hall of Fame today. I wonder how uncomfortable that was for Brett? And Ted Thompson? And Mike McCarthy? And others? Brett declined to answer any questions about his “unretirement” out of respect for the event and the individuals being honored. I wonder what the coming weeks will bring in regards to Brett’s possible return to the game?
I think former Packers defensive back LeRoy Butler made a very sensible statement. He feels Brett wavered …read more

Brett Favre Fox News Interview Part 2

Blogcasting the National Football League, Blogcasting the NFL
Here’s the transcript of the second half of Brett Favre’s interview with Greta Van Susteren of Fox News today. (Click here to read the first half.) I don’t know why Greta refers to the Minnesota Vikings as the Minneapolis Vikings.
Greta Van Susteren: Let me ask you something. Right now are the Packers paying you any money?
Brett Favre: No.
GVS: So you are, quote, retired?
BF: Yes.

GVS: What you want, since they don’t want you back, at least they’ve sent that message to you, they say they’ve moved on, you want to be released to pursue …read more

Brett Favre Fox News Interview Part 1

Blogcasting the National Football League, Blogcasting the NFL
It’s about time we heard Brett Favre’s side of his retirement story. Here’s the transcript of Brett’s interview with Greta Van Susteren of Fox News today. There is supposedly a second part which will air tomorrow.
Greta Van Susteren: Why did you retire so early?
Brett Favre: Well, I’m sure that a lot of people out there, of course there has been a lot of things said, and this is the first time I’ve talked. But one of the things from what I understand is that people are saying that Brett retired because the …read more

Packers Won’t Grant Brett Favre’s Release

Blogcasting the National Football League, Blogcasting the NFL
Following the news of Brett Favre’s request to be released by the Green Bay Packers yesterday, Packers GM Ted Thompson responded by saying the team would not grant that release and that Brett would possibly be the backup quarterback for the team if he comes out of retirement:
“We have to go with what’s real. We don’t know what the options are right now. We’ll talk about it internally. It’s all guess work. This is a very difficult spot we’re in. It’s a very volatile situation and we don’t have all the answers yet. …read more

NFL Reinstates Koren Robinson

Blogging the National Football League, Blogging the NFL
As I had hoped, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated Green Bay Packers WR Koren Robinson to the league today. Packers GM Ted Thompson released the following statement:
“The league has informed us that Koren Robinson has been reinstated, effective Thursday, October 18, 2007. We understand and appreciate the Commissioner’s consideration in this matter. It’s been a year since we’ve seen Koren, so our first step is to have him return to Green Bay. The Packers will request a roster exemption, during which time we would see where Koren is at in terms of football …read more
