But he’s only spent the past two as the team’s top cornerback—which means he gets to chase the opposition’s best receiver all over the field week-after-week. Obviously he’s been up to the task. In fact, last year he was the Bills’ leader in interceptions and pass breakups. So, he was awarded for his talents today. And a new four-year, $27 million contract extension will keep him in Buffalo’s defensive secondary.

Terrence McGee, Buffalo Bills / Image: Zuma Press

Terrence was scheduled to be a free agent when this season ends. But he won’t need to spend any time thinking about that possibility now:

“You definitely feel good about your long term security when you can get a deal like this done, but more importantly it allows you to focus more on football. At the same time I did my best to not even think about it because you don’t want it to affect your play. But it is good to get it over with and focus on making it to the playoffs.”

Terrence is doing less work for more money these days. Remember, he used to return kickoffs until defensive back Leodis McKelvin very successfully relieved him of those duties last season. Of course, after last Monday Night’s performance against the Patriots (Leodis had two KO return fumbles—one that ultimately decided the game), the Bills might be rethinking that.

In the first of eight games the Buffalo Bills will play in Toronto through 2012 (five regular season and three preseason), the first team offense looked very sharp in a 24-21 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Quarterback Trent Edwards was 9-of-11 for 104 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a critical 22-yard run from his own endzone. Tight end Robert Royal caught both of those TD passes from Trent. Wide receiver Lee Evans had three catches for 55 yards.
In the first of eight games the Buffalo Bills will play in Toronto through 2012 (five regular season and three preseason), the first team offense looked very sharp in a 24-21 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wide receiver Lee Evans had three catches for 55 yards. And despite missing Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters (still a training camp holdout), the offensive line was outstanding in both protection and run-blocking. With or without Jason, this group will ultimately be the key to Buffalo’s offensive success or failure this season. Trent Edwards concurred:

“We did a good job up front stopping their front four. There was plenty of time to throw the ball and that allowed our receivers to get open down the field, and allowed me plenty of time to be accurate with the ball.”

The play of the game was Bills rookie first round Draft pick Leodis McKelvin’s 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Buffalo already has one of the NFL’s best return team duos in Terrence McGee and Roscoe Parrish, but Leodis is getting a lot of work in the preseason so he figures to get into the mix down the road. With a near-sellout crowd of 48,400 fans in attendance at Rogers Centre (pretty good for a preseason game), it was a great start to the series with the game coming down to the final play.

Buffalo Bills first round Draft pick Leodis McKelvin signed a five-year, $19.4 million deal (with $12.6 million in bonuses) late yesterday. He missed the first two days of Bills training camp, and while any time missed is significant, especially for a rookie, he should be able to get caught up quickly thanks to his participation in OTAs this past offseason. Leodis was understandably thrilled and ready to hit the field:

Buffalo Bills first round Draft pick Leodis McKelvin signed a five-year, $19.4 million deal (with $12.6 million in bonuses) late yesterday. He missed the first two days of Bills training camp, and while any time missed is significant, especially for a rookie, he should be able to get caught up quickly thanks to his participation in OTAs this past offseason. Leodis was understandably thrilled and ready to hit the field:

“I’m really happy. I’m ready to come to camp and get things started with the team and compete and help the team out. I’ve been ready. I just want to get out there and help the defense out and just play football. Things will go up another notch for me. I want to play so for things to go well for me I’m just going to come out here and work very hard and try to get the team to the playoffs. That’s everybody’s goal right now, try to get to the playoffs and try to win a Super Bowl. We haven’t been to the playoffs since ‘99 so we’re going to try to get to the playoffs. That’s the first step.”

Leodis is expected to challenge Jabari Greer for a starting cornerback spot opposite Terrence McGee. But whether he starts or not, one thing’s for sure. Along with CB Ashton Youboty, he’ll see plenty of playing time this season. With Leodis’ signing (amidst a flurry of activity recently), it leaves only three remaining 2008 first round Draft picks unsigned — #7 Sedrick Ellis (New Orleans), #8 Derrick Harvey (Jacksonville) and #9 Keith Rivers (Cincinnati).

I worked last night’s incredible Monday Night Football game from Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY. It was the first MNF game in Buffalo in 13 years. Despite finishing +5 in the turnover battle, the Bills were not able to hang on and lost a 25-24 heartbreaker to the still-undefeated Dallas Cowboys on the last play of the game. I’ve got an interview with Bills DB Jabari Greer over on the BPR Home Team Edition podcast series. You can also read my thoughts from the game. But here’s a short interview I did with DB/KR Terrence McGee from the Bills postgame locker room. Terrence was in on seven tackles, had several passes defensed and returned a kickoff 103 yards for a TD.

DAVID: What an incredible game, Terrence. Incredibly disappointing, I know, but just a tremendous game.

TERRENCE: Yeah, it’s kind of crazy that we even lost that game. We just got so many turnovers. I think overall we just played a good game and to come up one play short in the end … it’s really hard. There are a lot of guys hurting in this locker room.

DAVID: What did Coach Jauron tell you guys after the game?

TERRENCE: That this is just how things go sometimes. We played our hearts out. There isn’t anything else we could’ve done. We were just one play short.

DAVID: Can you walk away from this game saying you gained anything from the loss?

TERRENCE: Your guess is as good as mine, man. We played so well and to get a loss it just hurts so bad, so … It shows that we can go out and make plays, though. We had a whole bunch of turnovers and if we can just go out there and make plays. We just have to finish games. If we can get to the point where we can finish games, we’ll be alright. We played real well. We just gotta finish.

DAVID: This is going to be a good football team.

TERRENCE: Yeah, I think we showed to whoever was watching the game, any other teams and fans in general that the Buffalo Bills — our record doesn’t show it but we are a good football team and we’re gonna play some real good football. That’s about the only thing we can take from tonight. Teams know we can go out and make plays. When you play us it’s gonna be a hard fought game, but at the end of the day, it’s all about wins and losses.

DAVID: The home crowd was great. It was an incredible atmosphere tonight.

TERRENCE: Yeah, it’s always like that. I mean, it’s Monday Night Football so it’s gonna be a little different but … This was my first Monday Night game. There was a lot of hype and a lot of people out tonight cheering us on. It was a good game.

DAVID: Is this a good time for a bye week?

TERRENCE: I think so. It’s time for guys to go back home and chill for a little bit and then come back and get focused and get ready for the Ravens and the rest of the season.
