Tony Dungy Meets With Michael Vick

Former NFL coach Tony Dungy met with imprisoned NFL quarterback Michael Vick today at Leavenworth (Kansas) Federal Prison. And according to Michael’s agent Joel Segal, “It was a private meeting between coach Dungy and Michael, and it was positive.” As much as I believe coach Dungy would simply pay a visit to Michael out of the goodness of his heart, my guess is that he was there on some sort of “official NFL business” and will speak with Commissioner Goodell afterward to offer a recommendation as to whether he feels Michael is truly remorseful for his actions.
Hopefully coach Dungy was …read more

Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance
by Tony Dungy with Nathan Whitaker, 260 pages, $24.99
Tyndale House Publishers | CoachDungy.com
Just a couple weeks after announcing his retirement from the coaching ranks of the National Football League, former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy has a new book — Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance — in stores today. I received my review copy last week and went cover-to-cover right away. I can enthusiastically say it’s the most uplifting, down-to-earth life lesson book I’ve ever read. And I’ve read my fair share.
You probably remember coach Dungy’s first book, …read more

My sources tell me that because of coach Tony Dungy’s retirement announcement a couple days ago, his publisher is moving the release date of his new book, Uncommon, up from February 17 to January 27. My review copy is on its way so I’ll have a post on that with my thoughts before it hits stores.

Tony Dungy Announces Retirement

National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast
Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy announced his retirement from the National Football League today. I was saddened — but not shocked — to hear the news earlier this afternoon that the Colts had scheduled a 5 p.m. presser. I anticipated what was coming. I didn’t feel it would do coach Dungy justice to pull quotes from a transcript, so here’s the whole thing.
Coach Dungy has always been one of my favorite NFL coaches and he’s been an inspiration to me in my own life. I greatly respect who he is as a person and …read more

If you’re looking for a last-minute Christmas/holiday gift idea, I suggest the great new book by Tampa Bay Bucs running back Warrick Dunn — Running For My Life. I received my review copy from Harper Collins a few weeks ago and I can tell you it’s a very inspiring, uplifting and eye-opening read.
Warrick is truly one of the good guys in the National Football League. It’s pretty well-known what he does for families through his …read more

‘The Greatest Game Ever Played’ Remembered Fifty Years Later

National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast
How many professional sports leagues can pinpoint the exact spot, the exact day, even the exact time they “arrived?” The National Football League can: Yankee Stadium, December 28, 1958, 4:51 PM. Fifty years ago this December 28 — the final day of the 2008 NFL regular season — what would become known as “The Greatest Game Ever Played” took place — the 1958 NFL Championship Game between the Baltimore Colts and New York Giants at Yankee Stadium in New York City. And when Colts fullback Alan Ameche burst through a hole for a one-yard touchdown …read more

Tony Dungy to Release New Book

National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast
I got a heads-up today on Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy’s new book entitled Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance (due out February 2009). This is the follow-up to The New York Times #1 best-seller Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life which sold more than a million copies and is one of the best-selling sports-related titles in history. Coach Dungy will once again partner with Tyndale House Publishers on this new book he considers to be his legacy message:
“Our young men today are falling into a trap. Society is …read more

Ed Johnson Cut by Colts After Arrest

National Football League Blogcast, NFL Blogcast
The Indianapolis Colts released starting defensive tackle Ed Johnson after he was arrested earlier today on a drug possession charge. Ed was stopped for speeding between midnight and 1 a.m. on I-465 just north of Indianapolis. Police also charged him with possession of marijuana. A disappointed Colts president Bill Polian released the following statement today:
“We will, effective tomorrow, waive defensive tackle Ed Johnson. We consider every violation of a team rule or NFL policy on an individual case-by-case basis. If club discipline is appropriate we consider the past record of the individual involved and the …read more

NFL Scouting Combine 2008: Day Two

Blogging the National Football League, Blogging the NFL
The winter storm that has an icy grip on Indianapolis has slowed things down outside. But as promised, today was a whirlwind of activity around the Media Work Room here at the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine. The players being shuttled in and out were mostly wide receivers, running backs and quarterbacks.
My day was really one big press conference with a few of my own interviews thrown in for good measure. I took part in every head coach presser — Tom Coughlin (Giants), Brad Childress (Vikings), Gary Kubiak (Texans), Tony Dungy (Colts), Herm …read more

Tony Dungy to Remain Head Coach of Colts, Assistant Jim Caldwell Ready and Waiting

Blogging the National Football League, Blogging the NFL
After being eliminated in the Divisional playoff round and failing to repeat as Super Bowl champions, it was unknown whether Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy would return as the team’s leader. It was rumored that me might want to hang up his whistle and return to his home in Tampa. But any doubts were put to rest today as Coach Dungy announced that he would return for at least one more season. During a press conference announcing the news today, Coach Dungy said:
“I love this franchise, I love my family. I wouldn’t …read more
