2009 NBA MVP Award Favorites

September 14, 2008 by Stephen Kersey
Filed under NBA News, NFL Player Analysis

Although training camp hasn’t started yet, it is never too early to take a look at the MVP favorites. For the 2008-2009 season, five players have a really great shot at winning the MVP award. Here are the top five 2009 NBA MVP candidates:

5. Tracy McGrady, Houston Rockets
If the Rockets can live up to their lofty expectation and Tracy McGrady can stay healthy all year, T-Mac has a chance to be in the MVP running. He’s an immensely talented player who could impress a lot of voters this season. Staying healthy will be a challenge, however.

4. Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat
In the Olympics, no player looked as surprisingly good as Dwyane Wade. Wade looked like it was the 2006 NBA Finals all over again. If he can remain healthy and lead the Miami Heat back into the playoffs, he should get a few MVP votes.

3. Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers should once again be very good. Kobe Bryant should once again be very good. The only thing that is a negative for Bryant in the MVP chase is the fact that he won the award last year. The MVP voters could be wanting to give it to someone new.

2. Chris Paul, New Orleans Hornets
Many NBA experts thought that Chris Paul deserved the MVP last season. If he can have another great season and help the Hornets achieve their lofty goals, there is no reason to not expect CP3 to be near the top of the voting again.

1. LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers
The time has come for LeBron James to win the MVP award. He’s arguably the best player in the league who hasn’t won the MVP and after a strong Olympics showing, he should be primed and ready to take home that trophy this year.

How good can LeBron James be in the 2008-09 season? MVP good?

  12. Bron Bron, The L Train, just bested D Wade last night! 31 points 9 assists 6 rebounds and 1 block 3 steals. Brought his team back from being down in the 4th Quarter and hit the big 3 pointers.

Bron sounds like the MVP TO ME!

LeBron James is 2008 – 2009 NBA MVP! Kobe is not MVP, Wade is Not MVP, Paul is Not MVP. Paul Pierce is not MVP (although he should be considered) Kevin Garnet is not the MBA MVP (although he should be considered)

ITS LEBRON 4 MVP! All this at only 23 years old his team is 16-0 at home. He shows an unbelievable level of maturity for a 23 year old and LeBron’s business acumen is off the charts.
As far as LeBron to New York, Lebron is going to go where he can win, so if the Cavs stay winning, LeBron stays, he wants to run with the winners, considering he is one. We promote LeBron 4 MVP because LeBron exemplifies teamwork something some of the so called superstars have forgotten about. LeBron exemplifies, “The Franchise” player. He has boosted his franchise to the next level, in a city that has never been so electrified by a sports icon since the Jim Brown era.

And when it comes to being surround by talent, LeBron has turned a bunch of journeymen and aging players to a TEAM in every sense of the word! LeBron makes players step their game up and it’s been the chemistry LeBron brings to the table and the synchronicity everyone is playing with coupled with the ability for everyone around him to believe in their own ability to perform at their peak LeBron gives his team mates a boost that makes his team work!

Thats what an MVP is all about. (TEAM WORK, ADDED VALUE TO YOUR FRANCHISE, SEASON PLAY AND PERFORMANCE, ADDED VALUE TO THE LEAGUE, WINNING!)

  16. T-Will says:

Kobe is the Best Player Today! LeBron may be most exciting, but in my opinion even though making strides in his game is a little over-hyped. I believe he will become the best as Kobe really declines in ability as he gets older. But for now, whoever faces the Lakers when it means something this year is gonna receive the Bidness!
That is from Mister Bryant. He knows the youngsters are breathing down his neck, just like he, T-Mac, Vince Carter, KG and all the rest chased Jordan. The only one who has matched or even exceeded Jordans skill level is KOBE—Live with it ya’ll the truth will set you free. LeBron is not even more skilled that Chris Paul or D Wade, he is more physical. He’s like a runaway train wreck at his position, but not the best, or most valuable player in the league yet. He as I said, is a media darling, who is up and coming, and receiving an assist, because they can make more money off of him than Kobe, who had to rebuild his image. Thats Real Talk, what say U?

  17. T-Will says:

Kobe-MJ-LeBron, and in this order in overall skills.
    Kobe better shooter.
    Kobe better free throws.
    Kobe better dribbler.
Kobe better use of both hands consistently.
MJ, more artistic dunker, more feared and respected by other players.
LeBRON: more powerful dunker. However, it doesn’t hurt to watch KOBE clown folks either, and he’s smaller.
Killer instinct, matched only by KOBE!
LeBRON, more physically imposing and dominant. He’s on the rise though, but not there yet.
    Titles: MJ–KOBE in this order.
    Greatest–MJ
    Most Skilled–KOBE.
LeBRON–Unguardable down low and off fast break.
    Three Pointers: KOBE
    Best Passer: LeBRON
Best dribbler and use of both hands: Kobe!
MJ: Jumps over whole team with agility.
Who would most GM’s hate to see with the ball in the last second? MJ or KOBE flip a freak’n coin—I would say Reggie Miller!!!
Their all three animals on both ends of the court, LeBron more so with defense blocking shots because of athleticism and blocks, MJ, be cause of some of the same and steals, and KOBE, lesser than MJ because of killer instinct.
Make your own choice–mine is KOBE most skilled, MJ Greatest ever–

  18. T-Will says:

MVP Debate—Last one and I’m out!
I want to clarify what I mean about Jordan being the greatest ever–it’s not as an overall skilled player. It’s his total package. Championship at North Carolina, Air Jordan’s–yes it’s got to be the shoes, seemingly no help at all–however, he played with Pippen–the second best player in the league for at least 3 years with him, Rodman, Horace Grant, Steve Kerr, and other great role players and was coached by Phil Jackson also. You couldn’t even look at Jordan, mere less touch him or it was a foul. Kobe gets gang raped all night long and most of the time no calls. No ones stupid enough to jump in front of LeBRON.

Now MVP–KOBE led league two years in a row in scoring and made all defensive first team those years with a garbage line-up around him and all the analyst’s said that’s not what it was about–and gave the MVP’s to Steve Nash–who???? This isn’t funny!

Now LeBron is redefining the game. I don’t think so, I believe he’s dominant at his position and has gotten an awesome point guard and more support from David West and Varachow oops, as well.

Kobe has been criticized for not making his team-mates better, but since he’s done that, he is now garbage. Heck, he’s still averaging 27.0 ppg and manages the game and team-mates as well as clutch at the end of games. Sounds like NASH and JORDAN to me. MVP===The one player that is most Valuable to the team, record is a factor, Clutch is a factor, Respect is a factor, and heads up play against the other teams best player every night. I believe that KOBE is not only more skilled, but is smarter and more experienced in tough situation’s during the stretch of games, while deferring to his team-mates to make them better.

I won’t say LeBRON doesn’t do some of the same, but I don’t believe anyone in the league will outplay, or outsmart KOBE and now matter how high you jump or how fancy your lay-ups it’s two points. He can still do all that, and slice your throat with a three pointer falling out of bounds with three seconds left in the fourth quarter
consistently and illegal in 49 states as one reporter recently called it. Don’t forget, Dominique Wilkins was much more physically imposing than MJ in their hey day’s, but MJ got all the credit, because he was more skilled and smarter. Sound Familiar???

  21. Jake says:

Top 5 NBA players Kobe, Lebron, Chris, Dwight, Tim Duncan, …. But the 2008-2009 MVP is Kobe Bryant 2005-2006 stats 35.4 PPG 5.7 APG 5.8 RPG. …But lets review Kobe s career Kobe a 10 time all star. Lebron a 4 time all star. A 3 time Champion. 3 time All star game MVP. 1 time MVP 8 time all defensive team. And in his 12 year career he has 22,660 career points 15th all time. And a career average of 25.2 points. Those are MVP stats. Yes Lebron, Dwayne, and Chris are good but compared to Bryant their crap!

  22. Karen kay says:

Lebron is a team player, that makes him valuable. MVP doesnt count only for shooting but how you lead your team. many are qualified but at present James is the best.

  23. JOJO GONZALES says:

i think kobe would win in NBA MVP 2009 cause he is more better than lebron james.

  24. Hey Hoops Fantasy, I am going to try and keep this as short as possible. Wade is the most valuable player in the league so far this season, and here is why.

Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat weren’t expected to do anything this season. I mean, Wade is playing with Dequan Cook, Mario Chalmers, Chris Quinn, and Joel Anthony… And they are winning… Not only are they just winning, but Dwyane Wade has led this team to wins against the “So called MVP candidates and their respective teams. Wade led the Heat to wins against Kobe and his Lakers, LeBron and his Cav’s (One his Birthday), Dwight and his Magic, Duncan and his Spurs, Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and their Hawks. If that is not enough, for people who like to say that Wade is doing the things that LeBron and Kobe has done in the past, how about this for numbers.. Granted, both LeBron and Kobe were both leading the lead in scoring, but has either of them been in the top two in steals? Has any of the two been in the top 17 in blocks? (Remind you, Wade is like 6’4), and has either of the two been ranked in the top 10 in assists this season? Is it me or did the Cavs play better against the Mavs with LeBron off of the court? Anyways, after the past few Weeks, Wade, Paul and Dwight Howard should be moved up on that list, and LeBron needs to go down. WADE FOR MVP!!! Please at least respond to this.

  28. Jesse says:

OMG Kobe on 3rd spot, its too early to say..Kobe will be the MVP.

  29. Jesse says:

LOL. LeBron is great but it’s just too much hype for a very young, very strong, very tall forward playing as a guard. A good talent with Power, not graceful, all brawl. Reminds me of Charles Barkley in his glory days, and my guess in 20 years, Lebron will be remembered just like Charles Barkley, maybe one MVP, a couple of scoring titles, shows up at All Star, and might be top 50 all time scoring records (all of these if he played his cards right). LeBron fans, Lebron will be one of the NBA great, but its a disgrace if you claim that he is better than Kobe, when everytime they match up, Kobe owns him. Stop it young NBA fans, you havent seen enough basketball to know the difference, your eyes are clouded by “young guns” being young and all.
Stats doesnt win a game, a championship. Just look at Kobe whose like a ballerina in mid air (with defenders of course) compared to Lebron whose like a drift wood in air all by himself.
    CUT IT OUT. Another LOL.

  30. Jesse says:

Michael Jordan is a basketball GOD.

    PERIOD.

Only Kobe Bryant so far is the closest comparison. Yet.

    PERIOD.

  31. Though it is hard for me, as a Celtics fan, to say this but I guess KOBE is the better man than any of the MVP candidates. I respect the statistics that the players put up but by simply analyzing the standings and the manner of plays in each games, I would have to say that Kobe is the best for the MVP award this season.

I hope the Celts will make a move to strengthen thier standings and start playing good. Unfortunately for Kevin Garnett, his stats went down since the start of this season, or rather since the finals last year. I haven’t seen the intensive energy that he usually play with when he’s still in the Volves together with casell and sprewell. Hope they could win the championship.

Give Kobe the MVP just grab the CHAMPIONSHIP. Anyways your the champs. GO CELTICS GO!!!

BUT he hasnt been the best player in the nba for the past 2 years….period. lets be real, when did all the talk really escalate about lebron and kobe about who is the best in the NBA? 2 years ago. if anyone can tell me how you can be the best player in the nba if your numbers does not prove you are the best. in the past 2 YEARS, lebron has averaged more points, more rebounds, more assists, more blocks and was playing with a sub-par team and still able take the celtics to game 7 and lost by 5. who ever thought paul pierce would score over 40 points. also in head to head matchups against kobe 6-5 in favor of lebron. all i read is kobe’s has rings and all defensive team, etc and he is compared to jordan. great for him. so if going to mention rings, then robert horry is better that kobe cause he has more rings. kobe has been in the league longer than lebron so more experience, etc. We are talking about RIGHT NOW. who is a better player. so stop mentioning rings and all that crap cause we are talking about right now. LEBRON’S NUMBERS ARE TOO GREAT..AT 24 YEARS OLD..LET ME KNOW OF A PLAYER THAT WAS DOING THAT AT 24..23…22…21 YEARS OLD. WASNT KOBE TOO BUSY SHOWING BOATING AND RIDING SHAQS BACK…AND LEBRON IS NOT COMPARED TO JORDAN CAUSE HE IS TOO BIG…LEBRON IS THE ONLY PLAYER I KNOW THAT HAS BEEN COMPARED TO LARRY BIRD, OSCAR ROBERTSON, MAGIC JOHNSON AND MJ….AND IT TOOK KOBE 12-13 YEARS TO LEARN TEAM BALL..13 YEARS…UNTIL KOBE CAN PROVE HE CAN WIN A RING WITHOUT SHAQ OR GET TO THE FINALS WITH A SUB-PAR TEAM LIKE LEBRON…THEN HE WILL BE THE BEST..POINT BLANK…ITS THE NUMBERS, THE ALL AROUND PLAY….LIKE YOU KEEP SAYING HE IS YOUNG, BIG AND IS A TRAIN WRECK THAT CANNOT…I REPEAT…CANNOT BE STOPPED

please tell me in what category that kobe is better than lebron. points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, field goal percentage. and the answer is none of the above. carmelo is better than lebron?? you know he is not. you are a lebron hater. lebron numbers are too great. like i said how can kobe be the best but his numbers doesnt prove he is the best?? kobe has 13 years in the league and it took him 12 years to understand teamwork. kobe is being coached by one of the best coaches to ever coach the game. kobe has ALWAYS been surrounded by all star players on his team with shaq, gasol, odom and the emerging bynam. didnt lebron take the celtics to 7 games, while kobe lost by 39 POINTS in the NBA FINALS. dont think lebron will let that happen. ask paul pierce who would he rather see in the playoffs lebron or kobe. guaranteed paul would say kobe because paul already admitted that lebron is the toughest player he has ever faced in his career. and still you are forgetting the MOST IMPORTANT FACT, HE IS ONLY 24 YEARS OLD. so say what u want to say but we will continue to hear lebron for the next 10-12 years wow
