Boston Celtics: Fantasy Basketball Perspective

It’s hard to argue against the Boston Celtics being the best team in basketball at the moment. At 26-3, the Celtics have started the season better than anyone could have imagined. While they are a definite championship contender, how does their success translate to the fantasy world?
Surprisingly, the Celtics haven’t produced great fantasy numbers this season. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are all great players, but their stats have been down due to having to share the load.
Hit hardest has been Ray Allen. His fantasy worth is much less than what it has been in previous seasons. He’s shooting the ball less, for a lower percentage and isn’t making up for it in the assist or rebounding department. Kevin Garnett is playing fewer minutes than he has in a long time, which is affecting his numbers. He’s still a great fantasy player, but not as great as he was in past years.
Paul Pierce has actually seen his fantasy numbers improve a bit. He’s rebounding well, racking up the assists and leading the Celtics in scoring. Pierce has always been a good fantasy player, however now he’s threatening to become a top ten fantasy player.
Of the other players on the Celtics, not many of them stand out in the fantasy world. Rajon Rondo is a solid yet unspectacular point guard. Kendrick Perkins is a good young center but he doesn’t play enough minutes to be a good fantasy player. Eddie House and James Posey are savvy veterans but neither offers much fantasy production.
There has been some talk about the Celtics looking to add a point guard. If they do, that point guard could become valuable quickly. With the Big Three, any other player should be able to produce if given playing time.
