Jason Campbell Injury Update – Fantasy Football Impact

Jason Campbell, the starting quarterback on the Washington Redskins, is recovering from a dislocated patella that ended his 2007 NFL season. Campbell was in his first full year as a starter when he got hurt.

New head coach Jim Zorn is installing an offense that will feature the running back heavily and short passes. That doesn’t sound like a great mix for Campbell, especially in terms of fantasy football production. Campbell has been most productive when throwing the deep pass — but that might be a rare occurrence in 2008.

If Campbell falters — due to injury or poor play — Todd Collins is the backup. Collins was actually somewhat impressive last season after Campbell went down, however his weak arm limits his fantasy football potential.

If Campbell is healthy, consider a backup fantasy football quarterback who has a chance of becoming a starting quality QB at some point. His upside will be determined by how the young wide receivers on the Redskins play, especially 2008 NFL draft pick Devin Thomas.
