Michael Curry Hired by the Detroit Pistons – Fantasy Impact

As was expected after firing Flip Saunders, Joe Dumars has selected Michael Curry as the Detroit Pistons’ next head coach. Curry spent one year as an assistant coach on Saunders coaching staff and is now being handed the keys to the team.
Curry as a player was a defense-first type player. He was also a very good leader and one of the most popular players in the league. As a coach, you can expect that he will demand very good defense. He’ll also bring more of a toughness to the sidelines that Saunders didn’t offer.
However, in terms of fantasy basketball, this is a questionable hire. Saunders is a very good offensive coach and Curry was a very inept offensive player. Unless Curry can learn on the job quickly, the team’s offense may take a step backwards in 2008-09. If that’s the case, virtually ever Pistons player will be worth less in fantasy basketball.
Teams that Curry played on almost always played at a very slow pace, which is another sign that Curry will opt for a slow down, defense-first philosophy. Keep an eye on how he progresses as a coach but for now, lower the stock of players on the Pistons.
