NFL 2008 Mock Draft – Dallas Cowboys

Since the Dallas Cowboys have two first round draft picks (22 and 28), there has been a lot of talk about what the Cowboys will do on draft day. Will they trade up in the draft? Will they trade down in the draft? Will they try to fill needs? Will they take the best player available?

One of those questions was answered recently when owner Jerry Jones said he wouldn’t be trading up into the top five picks in the draft. There had been some speculation that the Cowboys could look to trade up to get the first overall pick but that speculation has died off. Instead, it looks like the Cowboys are content to keep their two picks.

Trading down is an option but it looks like the Cowboys would be smart to stay right where they are and get two players than can help them right away. With Terrell Owens only having one or two years left at a superstar level, the time to win is now in Dallas. Picking pieces that can fill holes immediately is what makes the most sense.

At 22, the Cowboys should look to add DeSean Jackson out of California. Jackson is a wide receiver, but even more importantly he has the potential to be a game changing return specialist. Jackson could step in right away and give the Cowboys a special teams weapon that could help the team win a few extra games. Jackson would also prove to be a deep threat for the Cowboys in their vertical passing game.

Felix Jones at 28 makes a lot of sense. Jones, who was Darren McFadden’s backup at Arkansas, would be a perfect complement to Marion Barber III. With Barber and Jones in the backfield, the Cowboys would have their own version of thunder and lightening.

If either of these two players aren’t available, going for a cornerback such as Mike Jenkins, Aqib Talib or Brandon Flowers makes a lot of sense.

So let me get this right. Your direct quote was “With Terrell Owens only having one or two years left at a superstar level, the time to win is now in Dallas. Picking pieces that can fill holes immediately is what makes the most sense.”

First of all, try telling T.O. to his face that he only has ONE or two good years left, I dare you. Second, when is it ever not the time to win. The time to win is ALWAYS now. Are you seriously trying to have us believe that if we traded down one or both of our two first rounders into the second and third rounds to pick up extra picks and avoid paying these exorbitant first round pick salaries to completely unproven athletes, we wouldn’t be able to find someone who could help us right away? Really? Have you heard of Marion Barber? How about Jay Ratliff? Nick Folk, maybe?

Don’t be ridiculous. I don’t see Bobby Carpenter and Anthony Spencer going to any Pro Bowls. Or Marcus Spears for that matter. Please don’t go trashing the idea of trading down and adding to the draft haul instead of standing in line like a good boy for your next turn at the buffet. The Cowboys have never been good boys. That’s why we love them. They’re COWBOYS.

Finally, DeSean Jackson?!? Seriously? You actually give him a first round grade? I mean, you’re kidding, right? Dude, he’s 5′ 9″! Get a clue.

This article makes no sense at all. The main reason is simple SALARY CAP. The ‘Boys are close to breaking the bank now. I can’t imagine what paying 2 first rounders will do to it… especially 2 reaches in the first round. It’s a deep draft for RB’s… don’t take one on the 1st only to split time with MB3. Dallas has a solid stable of young wr’s waiting for a shot not to mention a great pass catching TE. Lets think about balance. Adding a 1st rd wr to the mix means they made a huge mistake in extending Cryaton’s just to be a # 4 optionin the passing game. Dallas needs CB’s in a bad way ecpecially in the nickel! A SS that can cover the pass would be considered a need as well. The league has gone to a vertical pass game and Roy Williams’ time has passed…he isn’t gettin’ it done. Just look at what NE did to Dallas last year. Trade the 28 pick into a high second and a 4th or 5th. Watch for a Ray Rice or even Mike Hart at the RB position. Watch for Donnie Avery or Andre Caldwell. A CB I like Antoine Cason or Tracey Porter to fill Dallas biggest need. They’ll need at least 2 CB this year out of the draft or with a rookie free agent so why not go for quality and the future. Henry and Newman are getting up there in age.
