Allen Iverson for Chauncey Billups Trade

The fantasy basketball impact of the Allen Iverson for Chauncey Billups trade is difficult to piece together. It’s such a drastic difference for both teams that it may take a few months to sort out. The trade, which was completed earlier in the week, sends Allen Iverson to Detroit for Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheick Samb.

First of all for the Nuggets, they finally have a star point guard to build around. Every since trading away Andre Miller, Denver has struggled to find a floor general. Although Billups isn’t as good as he was a couple seasons ago, he’s still an elite point guard. Expect his fantasy basketball numbers to remain relatively the same in Denver.

The biggest winner on the Nuggets roster is Carmelo Anthony. He’ll get a lot more shots now that he doesn’t have to share with Iverson. Anthony should once again challenge for the league lead in points per game. His percentages should also improve now that he has a player to set him up. The other big winner on the Nuggets is JR Smith. He should see way more time at shooting guard and could blossom into a big time scorer who could lead the league in three-pointers made. The big loser on the Nuggets is obviously Anthony Carter, who will go from starter to limited bench player.

For the Pistons, things aren’t nearly as cut and dry. Iverson likely will first begin as the team’s point guard. But throughout his career, Iverson has struggled running the show. With so many different pieces to feed, it’s questionable whether he’ll be able to be a full-time point guard. If he can’t survive at point guard, that opens the door for Rodney Stuckey to play even more. There’s even a chance that the Pistons could opt to start Stuckey and Iverson in the backcourt and then bring Richard Hamilton off the bench. Another option is for Tayshaun Prince to become a pseudo point guard and let Iverson play off the ball.

Amir Johnson and Jason Maxiell should also see the fantasy stocks rise due to taking up more of McDyess’ minutes. However, rumor has it that McDyess may return to Detroit after a buyout – a la Brent Barry and the San Antonio Spurs last season.

Fantasy Basketball Week 7: Waiver Wire Pickups

Travis Outlaw, Portland Trail Blazers
If he’s available on your league’s waiver wire, pick him up. Outlaw, who has always had loads of potential, has scored at least 20 points in three straight games and seems as if he’s finally starting to blossom. He’s also rebounding at a good pace while mixing in some blocks, so he’s a really nice pickup at this point.

Larry Hughes, Cleveland Cavaliers
Hughes returned from his injury to put up 22 points for the Cavs. While he’s far from a sure thing, there’s always a chance that he can return to his former status as being one of the better fantasy player in the league. If you have room, sign him off the waiver wire and watch how he plays. If he starts getting big minutes, he’ll most likely become a startable player at that point.

Anthony Carter, Denver Nuggets
Carter has been starting at point guard for the Nuggets and has played pretty well. He’s had a couple of explosive outings, which could help him land the job permanently. With Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony as teammates, it isn’t hard to imagine Carter averaging a lot of assists.

Kenyon Martin, Denver Nuggets
Martin is playing really well as his minutes have recently been increased. Coming off his second microfracture surgery, the Nuggets brought him along slowly. However, now he’s routinely playing more than 30 minutes and is putting up nice stats. Pick him up if you can.

Chris Quinn, Miami Heat
With Jason Williams sidelined by an injury, Quinn got the start and played big minutes for the Heat. Williams is expected to miss at least a couple more games and Quinn will continue to start until he comes back. Although, Pat Riley has benched Williams already this year, so if Quinn plays well, he could actually win the starting job.

Fantasy Basketball Super Sleepers

Shawne Williams, Indiana Pacers
Williams is a very talented second year player out of Memphis. He served a suspension earlier this season but since he’s been active, he’s produce rather well. Due to his size and skillset, he can play a number of positions. If his minutes increase, he’ll be a very good fantasy player.

Anthony Carter, Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets desperately need a true point guard. Allen Iverson is a very talented player but he’s best at shooting guard. The Nuggets would prefer for a point guard to emerge and that player could be Carter. Carter has played very well of late and could be in line for big minutes soon.

Hakim Warrick, Memphis Grizzlies
Last season, Warrick had a bit of a breakout season. He averaged over 12 points and over five rebounds. This year, under a new coach, Warrick’s minutes have been slashed. That said, he’s producing rather well in limited minutes. If he can crack the starting lineup at some point, he could become a solid fantasy player this year.

Jared Dudley, Charlotte Bobcats
The Bobcats are a talented team but they have a lot of injury prone players. If any of their starters gets injured, Dudley is a player who could go from fantasy irrelevant to fantasy relevant overnight. He has a nice all-around game and he’s on a team that likes to get out and run.
