In the offseason, Peyton Manning underwent a relatively serious surgery on an infection in his knee. While he didn’t play in any of the preseason games, everyone with the Colts expects Manning to be ready once the real games start.

Tom Brady, New England Patriots
Tom Brady has been suffering from an unspecified leg injury for much of training camp and preseason. While the Patriots are being secretive of his health status, expect him to be ready to go when the games begin to count.

Antonio Gates, San Diego Chargers
Perhaps the most mysterious injury of them all, Antonio Gates still hasn’t played after undergoing offseason toe surgery. While many expect him to play in Week 1, there is growing speculation that the Chargers may sit him until he’s 100%.

Jerry Porter, Jacksonville Jaguars
Jerry Porter has a hamstring injury that is being slow to heal. Although he should be able to come back pretty soon, it is looking doubtful that he’ll be ready to roll in Week 1.

Reggie Brown, Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles are reportedly concerned about Reggie Brown’s status for their opening week game. Brown is dealing with a hamstring injury that doesn’t appear to be healing quickly enough.

Jeremy Shockey, New Orleans Saints
Although Jeremy Shockey didn’t play at all in preseason, he’s very likely to play in Week 1. Shockey is still recovering from the leg injury he suffered last year with the New York Giants.

Bernard Berrian, Minnesota Vikings
Dealing with a condition that has been described as something close to turf toe, Bernard Berrian has missed a few preseason games. The good news is it appears he’ll be ready for opening weekend.

TJ Houshmandzadeh, Cincinnati Bengals
Although TJ Houshmandzadeh has a sore hamstring that has hampered him lately, expect him to be close to 100% by NFL opening weekend.

DJ Hackett, Carolina Panthers
Suffering from a toe injury, DJ Hackett has been limited in preseason action. That said, sources close to the team expect Hackett to play in Week 1.

The Chicago Bears entered the 2007 season as a team with a questionable offense and a world class defense. By the end of the 2007 season, the Bears’ offense was even more questionable and their defense wasn’t as dominant as it had been in the past.

Heading into the 2008 NFL Draft, the Bears have a lot of holes in their roster. Offensively, they still have Rex Grossman at quarterback. Cedric Benson was a disappointment at running back and he’s returning as the likely starter. Muhsin Muhammad and Bernard Berrian were lost to free agency – thinning an already thin corps of wide receivers.

With the 14th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Bears will likely be in the market for the best offensive player available. Although they’ve invested a lot of time and effort in Benson, the team could very well take another running back this year. Rashard Mendenhall could be on the board and he’d give another option if Benson struggles again in 2008.

At wide receiver, the Bears will likely consider Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas. If Kelly is still on the board, he’d make a very solid pick. Thomas would be a bit of a reach but the team is so desperate for wide receiver help that it’d be understandable.

Grossman appears safe for another year because this draft isn’t very top heavy when it comes to quarterback. It’s extremely unlikely that the Bears will pick a quarterback in the first round.

Overall, expect the Bears to target either Kelly or Mendenhall. If both are off the board, Thomas would make sense. If all three are off the board, the Bears could look at another receiver such as Limas Sweed or Mario Manningham.

Check out this Rashard Mendenhall video:

Berrian spent the first four seasons of his career with the Chicago Bears.

Berrian is a speed receiver who is a tough cover for any cornerback. In terms of pure speed up the field, Berrian is one of the fastest in the NFL. Last season with the Bears, he started off slowly but ended up having the best season of his career. He finished the season with 71 catches, 951 yards and five touchdown catches.

The 27-year-old receiver out of Fresno State has a good chance of becoming the Vikings’ number one wide receiver. Although he’ll have Tarvaris Jackson throwing him the ball, Jackson isn’t that much worse than the quarterbacks Berrian had throwing him the ball in Chicago. In fact, Jackson was quite good at the end of 2007.

In 2008, expect Berrian to put up similar numbers to the numbers he put up last year with the Bears. Whether he’ll do slightly better or slightly worse will depend on how well Jackson will play in his third season in the NFL.

Unfortunately for several NFL teams and fantasy owners alike, Week 5 saw many notable players go down with injuries.

Jamal Lewis, RB, Baltimore Ravens
After his first carry, Lewis left the game against the Patriots and was unable to return. After the game, Lewis said the injury wasn’t serious. However, he’ll likely have an MRI which may tell a different story. Jason Wright is Lewis’ backup.

Michael Pittman, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Pittman started in place of regular starter Cadillac Williams, who is out for the season with a knee injury. Pittman was injured early on and it appears he will be out for a while with an ankle sprain. The job of starting running back for the Bucs now falls on the shoulders of Earnest Graham.

Trent Green, QB, Miami Dolphins
Green was injured by a knee to the side of his helmet. He suffered a concussion and was taken off the field in a stretcher. Last season, Green had a concussion that kept him out for a number of weeks. At 37-years-old and with a history of concussions, it shouldn’t surprise if Green’s season and possibly career are over.

Matt Leinart, QB, Arizona Cardinals
Leinart fractured his left collarbone and will be sidelined for a number of weeks. It’s possible that he’s out for the rest of the season. Fantasy-wise, there shouldn’t have been many teams relying on Leinart on a week to week basis. Kurt Warner will take over the reins as Arizona’s quarterback.

Damon Huard, QB, Kansas City Chiefs
Huard exited the game with a bruised shoulder in the fourth quarter. While the injury doesn’t appear to be serious, Huard could possibly lose his job anyways to backup Brodie Croyle. Croyle entered the game in the fourth quarter and led the Chiefs to their only points of the ballgame.

Deion Branch, WR, Seattle Seahawks
Branch left the game against the Steelers with a sprained right foot. His status going forward is unclear. If Branch were to miss any amount of time, Bobby Engram and Nate Burleson are likely replacements to see Branch’s targets.

Brandon Stokley, WR, Denver Broncos
Stokley left the game with a head injury. His status is unknown going forward. If he misses time, expect even more passes to go in the direction of Brandon Marshall. When Javon Walker returns to action, he’ll also pick up some of the extra targets if Stokley were to be sidelined.

Antwaan Randel El, WR, Washington Redskins
On his way to a big performance, Randel El got injured right before halftime and wasn’t able to return. His injury is being described as a hamstring issue. With Santana Moss also battling injuries, the Redskins wide receiving corps is really thin at the moment.

Bernard Berrian, WR, Chicago Bears
Berrian left the game against the Packers with a toe injury. If Berrian were to miss time, quarterback Brian Griese will probably target his pair of tight ends (Desmond Clark and Greg Olson) more often.
