QB Byron Leftwich, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Although not exactly thought of as a quality fantasy football starter, Leftwich has a lot going for him this week. He’s playing at home against a banged up New York Giants defense and he’s coming off of a big week. Roll the dice if you are feeling lucky.

Byron Leftwich - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Image: Zuma Press)

RB Chris Wells, Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals are going against the Indianapolis Colts — the team that just got ran over by Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. Wells, even though he’ll be playing behind Tim Hightower, could be productive in Week 3.

WR Miles Austin, Dallas Cowboys
The Carolina Panthers have struggled on defense this season — especially against speed. Miles Austin can run and he could have a big day against the lumbering Panthers D.

TE Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers
Going against the Minnesota Vikings, the Niners probably won’t have much success running the ball. If that’s the case, expect Vernon Davis to get plenty of looks from quarterback Shaun Hill.

Going into the 2009 fantasy football season, there are many quarterback controversies all around the NFL. One such quarterback controversy will take place in Tampa Bay where the Buccaneers don’t have a clear cut QB at this point.

Sources close to the situation believe that Luke McCown has a good chance of beginning the year as the starter. He has been with the Bucs for the last few years but he doesn’t have much NFL experience. His only on field experience came with the Cleveland Browns in 2004 and the Bucaneers in 2007 and 2008. In total, he has has completed 142 of 238 passes and has nine touchdowns to go with 10 interceptions.

McCown has decent size and has a stronger than average arm. If he holds onto the starting gig, he’ll be a decent fantasy football option. However, going into the season, he’d be best used as a third-string fantasy QB.

Another option in Tampa Bay is Byron Leftwich. After starting his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he never really lived up to expectations. He struggled with injuries and lack of quality wide receiving options didn’t help.

Last year, Leftwich won a Super Bowl ring as Ben Roethlisberger’s backup. In his limited time, Leftwich was impressive. If he wins the Buccaneers jobs, he doesn’t have a high ceiling but he doesn’t have as risk as McCown due to his experience.

Last but not least is Josh Freeman. The Bucs picked him in the first round and he’ll eventually be the team’s starter at QB. The question is when his time will arrive. It might be this season but it also might take a few seasons for him to grow into the position.

RB Ronnie Brown, Miami Dolphins
Brown hurt his knee in the game against the Patriots and missed the rest of the game. There is some talk that this could be a major injury, which could be devastating to Brown owners. Jesse Chatman would likely get the start if Brown is unable to go.

WR Michael Clayton, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Clayton has been a disappointment ever since his big rookie season. Against the Lions, Clayton injured an ankle after catching a pass. He’s not much of a fantasy player at this point and if he’s out, it wouldn’t change much for the Bucs on offense.

TE Tony Scheffler, Denver Broncos
Scheffler had an expanded role for the Broncos on Sunday night after being slowed early in the year by injuries. He was playing well in his increased role before injury his foot in the fourth quarter. His status for Week 8 is unclear.

If you have players injuries or bye weeks, here are some fantasy players that may be worth picking up off the waiver wire this week.
Byron Leftwich, Atlanta Falcons
The Joey Harrington Era is over in Atlanta. Enter Byron Leftwich. While Leftwich has never been a great fantasy player, he’s had his moments over the years. In Atlanta, his wide receiving corps is pretty weak, which means that his fantasy appeal is pretty shaky. However, if you have quarterback issues, it can’t hurt to pick him up and see if he surprises.

Michael Bennett, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Bennett was traded from the Chiefs to the Buccaneers on the trade deadline. While Bennett likely won’t start to begin with, he has a pretty decent chance of eventually winning that job. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and he’s always been extremely fast. If he eventually starts, he could be a good third running back on a fantasy team.

Lance Moore, New Orleans Saints
Moore has won the second wide receiving spot next to Marques Colston in New Orleans. That’s rather big fantasy news with the way the Saints offense performed last season. If the Saints, who showed some life last week, can return to their high octane ways, Moore becomes a very nice pickup. He’s already a Drew Brees favorite and is a good emergency fantasy starter at this point with potential for more.

Eric Johnson, New Orleans Saints
Much like Moore, Johnson is a guy who can really bust onto the scene if the Saints’ offense turns it around. He had a touchdown last week and was close to having a second later in the game. He has the size and the hands to be a red zone target. With the Saints having a favorable schedule over the next couple weeks, he’s worthy of being a bye week fill-in.
