Best Fantasy Basketball Passers – January

Steve Nash, Phoenix Suns
Although Steve Nash got off to a slow start after the departure of Mike D’Antoni, he’s starting to find his old self. In the month of January, he’s leading the NBA in assists — averaging more than 11 per game. Expect him to continue to play at a high level for the rest of the season.

Deron Williams, Utah Jazz
Early in the season, Deron Williams missed time due to an ankle injury. Even when he got back on the court, he wasn’t playing that well. But now he seems like he’s close to 100% and he’s back to be a very good fantasy option. His assists per game is up over 10 for the month of January.

Chris Paul, New Orleans Hornets
For a player who is averaging 11 assists on the season, it’s no surprise that he’s one of the best passers in the month of January. That said, his assists per game this month is slightly under 10, which means he’s in a slump, relatively of course.

Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics
For those who drafted Rajon Rondo, they have to be pleasantly surprised by the number of assists he’s averaging this season. In January alone, he’s averaging 8.8 assists per game. Combine that with his shooting percentage, rebounds and steals and Rondo is a very solid fantasy contributor.

Deron Williams Injury Update – Ankle

Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz suffered a potentially serious ankle injury in a preseason game on Saturday. Williams, who has been relatively healthy throughout his career, will have an MRI on Monday.

After suffering the injured ankle, Williams was carried to the locker room. After the game, he was seen in a wheelchair. Williams declined to comment following the contest. The good news is that x-rays didn’t show a broken bone.

For as long as Williams is out, the Jazz will go with Ronnie Price and Brevin Knight at point guard. Price will likely be the starter, while Knight will go from third string to second string.

Price will have decent fantasy value as a starter but nothing close to Williams. While Williams is an all-around threat, Price is more of a scorer. Knight, on the other hand, isn’t much of a scorer but is good for assists.

Team USA Defeats Canada 120-65

While the game didn’t mean anything, Team USA started off its bid for a gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games with a masterful 120-65 win over Canada. This was Team USA’s first exhibition game in 2008.

Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Michael Redd each had 20 points for Team USA. Wade, who missed the end of the NBA season due to injury, looked especially strong. Kobe Bryant, Deron Williams and Chris Paul each chipped in double-digit points.

LeBron James’ ankle injury forced him to miss the game.

NBA Power Rankings – July Edition

1. Boston Celtics – The champs are still the best – despite losing Posey.
2. Los Angeles Lakers – They were good, and that was without Bynum.
3. San Antonio Spurs – The Spurs seem to always been hanging around.
4. New Orleans Hornets – The addition of Posey will be huge.
5. Detroit Pistons – The Pistons are basically the Spurs of the East.
6. Utah Jazz – Led by Deron Williams, the Jazz will continue to get better.
7. Cleveland Cavaliers – Any team with LeBron will be very good.
8. Houston Rockets – If Yao and TMac can stay healthy, watch out.
9. Dallas Mavericks – Not long ago, the Mavs were elite.
10. Phoenix Suns – Is this the last year the Suns will compete?

Best Fantasy Basketball Point Guards in 2008

With the fantasy basketball season now over, let’s review which point guards separated themselves from the pack. Who were the best fantasy point guards in 2008? Let’s take a look.

5) Deron Williams, Utah Jazz
Increasingly getting better each season, Deron Williams should remain a top fantasy point guard for many seasons to come. He can score, he can pass, he can shoot and every aspect of his game keeps getting better and better.

4) Steve Nash, Phoenix Suns
When it comes to passing, few in the history of the game have been better than Nash. However, Nash’s shooting in recent years may be even more impressive. His percentages were simply unreal this season.

3) Chauncey Billups, Detroit Pistons
Although he doesn’t have much flash in his game anymore, Chauncey Billups is still a very, very solid point guard. He’s a big, thick guard who knows how to play the game. In just about every facet, Billups can help you in fantasy basketball.

2) Baron Davis, Golden State Warriors
After a 2007 playoff run that excited the basketball world, Baron Davis built on that to have a very good season this year. He remained healthy and was a fantasy beast for much of the season.

1) Chris Paul, New Orleans Hornets
Not only was Paul easily the best point guard in 2008, he was easily the best overall fantasy basketball player this year. He’s a superstar who has room to get even better.

Top Ten Fantasy Basketball Players Under 25

1. Chris Paul, New Orleans Hornets
Paul is the best player in all of fantasy basketball this season. His game is perfectly built for him to be a fantasy basketball stud for a long time.

2. LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers
Perhaps the best player in all of the NBA, James is also great in the fantasy world. The scary part is he’s still getting better.

3. Chris Bosh, Toronto Raptors
Bosh is an underrated bigman superstar – in both the NBA and in fantasy basketball. His skill level seems to rise each month he’s in the league.

4. Josh Smith, Atlanta Hawks
Smith is an athletic freak and he’s also blessed with a lot of natural ability. He’s as explosive as anyone in the league.

5. Rudy Gay, Memphis Grizzlies
Although the Grizzlies are having another down year, Gay is emerging as a star. In fantasy basketball, he’s been fantastic in recent weeks.

6. Andrew Bynum, Los Angeles Lakers
Bynum is only 20-years-old but he’s already achieved fantasy greatness. His potential going forward is limitless.

7. Al Jefferson, Minnesota Timberwolves
While it was definitely tough to trade away Kevin Garnett, Jefferson will dull some of that pain. This kid can play.

8. Kevin Martin, Sacramento Kings
Martin is a largely unknown player due to him playing at a small college and now on the struggling Kings. However, Martin is simply an amazing scorer.

9. Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic
While his game isn’t completely fantasy friendly, his domination in real life still translates over to the fantasy world.

10. Deron Williams, Utah Jazz
Williams is point guard who will only get better as he ages. Right now, he’s already arguably a top five point guard in the league.

Underrated Fantasy Basketball Players

Here’s a look at an underrated fantasy player at each position.

C Andris Biedrins, Golden State Warriors
People don’t realize how much of a stud this guy is and how good he can become. He’s only 21 years old and last year he averaged over nine points, nine rebounds and nearly two blocks. The most exciting part is he did all that in under 30 minutes per game. Biedrins is still a baby as far as his NBA development and he has the potential to take his game up a few notches. If he does and gets added minutes, he’s a player you want on your side this season.

PF LaMarcus Aldridge, Portland Trail Blazers
Although he didn’t get much love last year when it came time to talk about the best rookies in his class, there’s a good chance Aldridge will become the best player of the 2006 draft. His potential should start to be realized this year as the Blazers’ offense should go through him. He’s a guy who could easily average 18 points, 8 rebounds and over a block a game. Don’t sleep on him.

SF Marvin Williams, Atlanta Hawks
Williams has been great in preseason for the Hawks and is on schedule for a breakout year this season. Through eight exhibition games, he’s averaging 17.1 points and over five boards. His numbers are going to take a jump in each area this season and he’s a lock to be a starter all season. For being such a young player, Williams is actually a very solid pick in a fantasy draft. He’s going to produce for you night in and night out.

SG Corey Maggette, Los Angeles Clippers
This is a contract year for Maggette, meaning there’s a good chance you’ll get his best effort. He has always been a mega talent but hasn’t always played with fire. With his contract expiring, you shouldn’t have to worry about that this year. Plus, with Elton Brand sidelined, Maggette suddenly becomes the team’s go-to scorer in some situations. The good thing about Maggette is not only does he score but he also rebounds and gets to the free throw line.

PG Deron Williams, Utah Jazz
I wrote about Williams a while ago but he’s worth writing about again. Williams is going to have a monster season. He took a giant step from his rookie year to his sophomore year and I expect another big step this year. He has few weaknesses in his game and he’s quickly becoming Utah’s best player. He should be one of the first point guards off a draft board but for some reason he’s not. If you can get Williams around his average draft position, he’s a fantastic pick.

Sleeper Point Guards

The point guard position is very deep in this year. There are about 25 legit point guard prospects that could start for your fantasy team and produce at a high level. While the ones at the top are obvious, here are three sleeper point guard picks for the 2007-08 season.

Deron Williams, Utah Jazz
A lot of people have Williams rated outside of their top ten fantasy point guards. Personally, I think that is ridiculously low. If you watched how he played in the playoffs, you would have watched a superstar being born. Williams is going to average a large number of assists and he’s becoming a great scorer on top of that. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Williams finish as a top five fantasy point guard this season.

Andre Miller, Philadelphia 76ers
Miller will have the ball so much for the Sixers that he can’t help but put up huge numbers. His assist numbers are going to be there and Miller has always been a good rebounder for his position. While he isn’t a great offensive threat, he could very well have a career year for Philadelphia this year.

Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics
Rondo is a bit of a risky pick because he’s so young and will have a huge amount of pressure on him this season. That said, if Rondo lives up to his billing, he could become a star. He’s already one of the best at accumulating steals and with Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce around him, there’s no reason why he can’t average over seven assists per contest.
