Center Fantasy Basketball Busts in 2008

Marcus Camby, Los Angeles Clippers
Although Marcus Camby has been a very good fantasy basketball player the last few years, look for his reign of dominance to come to an end. First of all, Camby is always an injury risk and he’s dodged quite a few bullets the last couple of years. Second of all, the Clippers will play at a much slower pace than the Nuggets. That in itself will lower his stats across the board. There is also some question regarding how well he will mesh on the court next to Chris Kaman.

Pau Gasol, Los Angeles Lakers
Pau Gasol is a very good NBA player but he may take a hit in the fantasy world this year. With Andrew Bynum next to him, he’ll likely have to forgo some of the touches downlow that he got all of last season. Additionally, Bynum will likely take away some of the rebounds and blocks that Gasol was getting. His shooting percentages should go up but that in itself won’t make up for the loss of production elsewhere.

Brad Miller, Sacramento Kings
The first strike against Brad Miller is the fact that he’s suspended to start the season. More importantly, he doesn’t quite fit the Kings any longer. The Kings are rebuilding for the future while Miller is already in his prime. In order to take a look at young players, don’t be surprised if Miller sees his minutes limited and other bigs on the roster such as Jason Thompson, Shelden Williams and Spencer Hawes get their opportunities in the sun.

Top Fantasy Basketball Rookie Centers

Al Horford, Atlanta Hawks
Coming into the season, many draft experts said that Al Horford was the prospect most ready to step in and play right away. Horford has proven that to be true and is now a fixture in the Hawks starting lineup. He’s a very solid player who has superstar potential down the line.

Sean Williams, New Jersey Nets
Although Sean Williams had off court issues clouding his draft stock, he has shown to be a very good basketball player on the court. He’s extremely athletic and has very good timing. If he can stay on the straight and narrow, he looks to be a great find for New Jersey.

Joakim Noah, Chicago Bulls
If the Bulls continue to slip down the Eastern Conference standings, expect Joakim Noah to become a big part of their rotation in the second half of the season. He has shown good potential and there’s no reason to believe that he won’t become a solid starter in the league.

Spencer Hawes, Sacramento Kings
Although he hasn’t shown much to date, Spencer Hawes has had a few flashes of brilliance. While those flashes have been few and far between, he’s a legitimate center prospect. If something were to happen to Brad Miller, Hawes is the next in line for big minutes.

Fantasy Basketball: Sleeper Centers

Nazr Mohammed, Charlotte Bobcats
Mohammed was having a very quiet season with the Detroit Pistons before he was traded to the Bobcats. Now in Charlotte, Mohammed is playing very well. In his first start, Mohammed had 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. In his second game as a starter, he had 20 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks.

Nenad Krstic, New Jersey Nets
Krstic has been horrible this year for the Nets. He was so bad in fact that the Nets decided to make Krstic go back to rehabbing his knee that he hurt last year. However, Krstic is close to returning to the team. If he can regain the health of his knee, he could be a very nice center – just like he was before he got hurt.

Andrea Bargnani, Toronto Raptors
Bargnani is starting look like a bust. In his second season in the NBA, his numbers are actually worse than they were last year. That said, he’s still very young and you have to think that the Raptors will keep giving him chances. If he can earn playing time, he can score well enough to become a very nice fantasy player.

Erick Dampier, Dallas Mavericks
Dampier hasn’t lived up to his potential since he signed with the Mavericks after starting his career with the Golden State Warriors. But as of the last couple weeks, he’s actually playing rather well. Over his last three games, he’s averaging around 30 minutes and has played relatively well in each game. In fact, Dampier has connected on all of his last ten field goal attempts.
