Hottest Fantasy Football Kickers 2008

Stephen Gostkowski, New England Patriots
Even though the Patriots don’t have Tom Brady, they’ve been able to find ways to move the ball. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski has taken advantage of 34 of his 37 field goal attempts and all 39 extra points. In Week 16, he had his best fantasy scoring game of the season against the Arizona Cardinals.
Kris Brown, Houston Texans
Over the last seven weeks, Kris Brown has been very good in fantasy football. He has at least two field goals in each game and at least one extra point. He went through a rough stretch earlier in the season …read more

Mike Vanderjagt Free Agent News

Mike Vanderjagt, the most accurate regular season kicker in NFL history, is once again getting looks from NFL teams. After being out of the league in 2007, Vanderjagt could very well begin kicking once again in 2008.
The team that apparently has the most interest currently is the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs have had trouble landing a quality kicker for what has seemed like the last decade. While the 38-year-old Vanderjagt would only be a stopgap fix, he’d likely be an upgrade.
If the Chiefs don’t sign him, the other team said to have interest is the Denver Broncos. The Broncos …read more

Week 17 Waiver Wire: Kickers and Defenses

Week 17 Waiver Wire: Kickers and Defenses

If you are in a league that plays through Week 17, a couple points here and there from your kicker or D might make a difference in a fantasy football championship. Here are some suggestions who you should play.
K Rob Bironas, Tennessee Titans
The Titans will be trying to win this game. To beat the Indianapolis Colts, they will probably rely on Bironas’ leg. There’s a good chance that Bironas has at least a couple field goals this week. The Colts don’t have much to play for and will likely sit their big names for much of the game.
K Josh Brown, …read more

Week 16: Emergency Kickers and Defenses

K Josh Scobee, Jacksonville Jaguars
With the Jaguars up against the Oakland Raiders, Scobee is a really nice start this week. If you are in a championship game, you can rely on Scobee to be effective this week. The Jaguars have a sound offense and Scobee has been fine since missing most of the beginning of the season with an injury.
K David Akers, Philadelphia Eagles
Akers is a solid veteran kicker who has been good for a number of years. This year he hasn’t been as explosive as usual but he should see some action in Week 16. Against the defense of …read more

Week 15: Emergency Kickers and Defense

Week 15: Emergency Kickers and Defense

K Ryan Longwell, Minnesota Vikings – While it’s tough to bank on offensive production out of the Vikings, this week should be a good week for Longwell. With Tavaris Jackson playing well and Chester Taylor and Adrian Peterson healthy, the Vikings’ offense is better than it’s been all year. Going up against the Chicago Bears with Kyle Orton at the helm, this promises to be a field goal battle. Expect at least two field goals from Longwell this week.
K Martin Gramatica, New Orleans Saints – With Olindo Mare out for the season with a dislocated hip, the Saints signed Gramatica …read more

Week 13: Emergency Kickers and Defenses

Week 13: Emergency Kickers and Defenses

K Nate Kaeding, San Diego Chargers – Kaeding has been horrible for much of the season. He turned it around last week with by far his best performance of the season. In Week 13, the Chargers travel to Kansas City to face the Chiefs. The Chiefs defense is stout, especially at home. That should lead to a couple of field goal attempts for Kaeding, who has been good at converting the few attempts he’s had this season.
K Matt Bryant, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Bryant and the Bucs play against the New Orleans Saints this year, a team that has been …read more

Pickup and Play: Kickers and Defenses

Pickup and Play: Kickers and Defenses

In this point of the fantasy season, kickers and defenses are more valuable than they were earlier in the year. The reason for that is it’s easier to predict how these positions will produce now that we have 11 weeks of games assess. Early on it’s more of a crapshoot but now there’s actually some numbers behind it.
Here are a pair of kickers and defenses that can most likely be picked up off the waiver wire and placed into your team’s starting lineup:
K John Kasay, Carolina Panthers – Even though the Panthers’ offense is a mess with injuries …read more

Week 9: Emergency Kickers and Defenses

Week 9: Emergency Kickers and Defenses

If you are looking for a kicker or defense to start this week, due to injuries or byes, these choices would be good in pinch.
K Jeff Reed, Pittsburgh Steelers – Reed was hot early in the year but has cooled off over the last couple weeks. However, this week, Reed should see a lot of action. The Steelers are going up against the Baltimore Ravens in what promises to be a battle of the field goal kickers. Both teams have very good defenses and there shouldn’t be many touchdowns being scored.
K Sebastian Janikowski, Oakland Raiders – Janikowski was horrible to …read more

The Kicking Question

What do you do when you see that dreaded bye week sign next to your fantasy kicker? What you don’t do is panic.
By Guest Blogger, Ron Bishow
Place kickers don’t get much respect, but they are vital to a football team. In fact, they can be the difference between winning and losing up to four games a season (Just ask the Denver Broncos).
While in real life kickers are often underrated, in fantasy football they are often overrated. One of the typical mistakes made by many fantasy football owners is drafting a kicker too early, wanting to complete their starting roster with …read more

Pick and Play Week 7: Kickers and Defenses

Rob Bironas, Tennessee Titans
Against the Texans with Vince Young’s status in doubt, Bironas should see the field quite a bit. This game promises to be a low scoring affair that could be won by the leg of a kicker. Bironas has been solid this season and while he’s not a great long-term kicker, he’s a nice play this week.
Josh Brown, Seattle Seahawks
Against the Rams, Brown should have a chance to shine. The Seahawks’ offense has been ugly at times this year, especially running the ball. With the Rams’ offense largely injured, a few Brown field goals could be enough …read more
