RB Darren McFadden, Oakland Raiders
Not long ago, Darren McFadden was a fifth round pick. Now, the Raiders RB is a third round pick in many drafts.

WR Vincent Jackson, San Diego Chargers
Slowly but surely, fantasy football drafts are seeing Vincent Jackson gain respect. Nowadays, he’s almost a lock to go in the fifth round.

TE Greg Olsen, Chicago Bears
With Cutler throwing the passes and Greg Olsen grabbing a starting gig, fantasy football owners are very high on the Bears tight end.

Fantasy football owners are trying to digest the news that Jay Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears from the Denver Broncos. This news will affect many NFL players in the fantasy football world.
First of all, Cutler himself probably sees his stock lower quite significantly. In Chicago, he joins a team with a mediocre receiving corps and a history of running the ball often. Logic suggests his stats will drop after spending his last few years in the wide open offense run in Denver.

Fantasy football owners are trying to digest the news that Jay Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears from the Denver Broncos. This news will affect many NFL players in the fantasy football world.

Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears (Image: Newscom)

First of all, Cutler himself probably sees his stock lower quite significantly. In Chicago, he joins a team with a mediocre receiving corps and a history of running the ball often. Logic suggests his stats will drop after spending his last few years in the wide open offense run in Denver.

For the Broncos, the wide receivers also see their stocks go south. Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal aren’t worth as much without Cutler delivering passes. However, whoever wins the running back battle for the Broncos could see their stock rise due to more carries.

In Chicago, the Bears receivers are now viable in the fantasy world. Devin Hester, the return specialist turned wide receiver, will be a popular sleeper pick during 2009 fantasy football drafts. If he enters the season as the number one wide receiver, Cutler could look for him early and often.

Tight end Greg Olson should also see his stock rise considerably following the acquisition of Cutler. He seems to have all the tools to be a star at the position and Cutler may be able to push him to the next level.

Also keep an eye to see on who will become the quarterback in Denver. With a new regime in town, the offensive tinkering may just have just begun.

QB Jay Cutler, Denver Broncos
During the offseason, Jay Cutler learned he had diabetes and took steps to combat the disease. During the 2008 fantasy football season, he’s looked very, very good. In Week 10, he threw for more than 400 yards and had three touchdown passes. Going forward, he has to be considered a top five quarterback in the fantasy world.

RB Thomas Jones, New York Jets
When you see the final score of 47-3, you probably thought Brett Favre destroyed the St. Louis Rams. While Favre had a pretty good day, it was actually Thomas Jones who did most of the damage. Jones had 149 yards and three touchdowns to thrill fantasy football owners around the world who started him.

WR Eddie Royal, Denver Broncos
Eddie Royal, not Brandon Marshall, was Cutler’s go-to wide receiver in Week 10. Royal started the season off very well but then went through a bit of a slump. It looks like he’s back at 100% and he’s now the most dangerous rookie wide receiver in fantasy football. Start him until he shows he’s not worthy.

TE Tony Gonzalez, Kansas City Chiefs
We had Tony Gonzalez as the best Week 10 tight end start and he didn’t disappoint. Gonzalez had 113 yards and two touchdowns to show why he’s still one of the best tight ends in the entire league. With Chiefs quarterback Tyler Thigpen playing quite well, Gonzalez should be a very good fantasy player for the rest of the season.

WR Ted Ginn Jr., Miami Dolphins
Many fantasy football owners have given up on Ted Ginn, Jr. With Ginn off to a slow start in 2008, it’s easy to let him sit on the waiver wire. But it should be realized that Ginn is still young and is still figuring out the NFL. Once he catches on, his vast natural ability could make him a star.

TE Nate Jackson, Denver Broncos
Tony Scheffler got injured in Week 5 and could miss some time. That could end up being the break Nate Jackson needs to become a fantasy viable tight end. He hasn’t done much in his career but Jay Cutler likes to look at his tight ends near the end zone.

After a quiet Week 1 game, Anquan Boldin exploded in Week 2. Kurt Warner looked for him early and often and Boldin finished with 140 yards receiving and three receiving touchdowns.

TE Tony Scheffler, Denver Broncos
Tony Scheffler was the recipient of two of Cutler’s four touchdown passes. He also had six catches for 64 yards to go along with the touchdowns.

K Ryan Longwell, Minnesota Vikings
In Week 2, Ryan Longwell went 5-for-6 on field goal attempts including one from 50+ yards. For those savvy fantasy owners who started him, pat yourself on the back.

Against the Detroit Lions, Green Bay put on a defensive show. All told, the Packers finished with five sacks, three interceptions and two defensive touchdowns.

QB Kerry Collins, Tennessee Titans
With Vince Young injured, Kerry Collins will step in as quarterback for the Titans. Collins has a great matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals and could be in line for a big day.

RB Sammy Morris, New England Patriots
Tom Brady won’t be there to pass around the football for the Patriots, which could lead to more runs for Sammy Morris. He had a good Week 1 and should follow that up with a solid Week 2.

WR Eddie Royal, Denver Broncos
In the first game of his NFL career, Eddie Royal looked like a future great player. Jay Cutler looked for him repeatedly and Royal didn’t disappoint. Start Royal with confidence until he shows otherwise.

TE John Carlson, Seattle Seahawks
With Seattle’s top four wide receivers injured (Deion Branch, Bobby Engram, Nate Burleson and Ben Obomanu), look for John Carlson to get a lot of looks in Week 2. He’s arguably the most talented receiver left on the Seahawks roster.

K John Carney, New York Giants
Even though John Carney is up in age and even though he’s not the full-time kicker for the Giants, he’s a very good start this week. Against the Rams, Carney should get two or three field goals at minimum.

D Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals defense looked extremely strong in Week 1. Feel free to start them again this week against Miami Dolphins.

In the 2008 fantasy football season, Cutler is a bit of a sleeper quarterback. He has good weapons offensively and he’s now mature enough to be depended upon. The diabetes news shouldn’t have an impact on his fantasy stock as there is no indication that he should be slowed down at all. Draft Cutler as you would without knowing about his condition.

“It’s something that he’s dealing with and something a lot of other people have,” said Marty Garafalo, Cutler’s business manager. “Even though it’s a serious condition, it’s a condition that can be managed. That’s the way he’s treating it right now.”

While we obviously hope Cutler the best, how does this news affect his fantasy football stock? It shouldn’t alter his stock much, however it could make him slightly less valuable in the short term. A lot of fantasy owners will want to see Cutler perform at his previous level before giving him the green light.

Due to Cutler’s diabetes, he will require daily insulin injections. The good news is a number of athletes have dealt with the illness without it affecting their playing career.

The bottomline is that if you own Cutler, you shouldn’t worry. However, you may find it more difficult to trade him for fair value for the time being.

The Denver Broncos have had to deal with a lot of issues in this offseason. Earlier, Brandon Marshall suffered an arm laceration that will sideline him for a few months.

All eyes were on the epic matchup between the Patriots and Colts this weekend. But from a fantasy perspective, there was a lot more going on around the NFL. Several players went down with injuries on Sunday. Here’s the infirmary report.

QB Jay Cutler, Denver Broncos – Cutler left the game with a leg injury in the second quarter and didn’t return. It appears as if the injury could be serious but as of now, his status is uncertain going forward. Patrick Ramsey is the backup QB.

QB Tavaris Jackson, Minnesota Vikings – Jackson is hurt yet again. This time he suffered a concussion. With as injury prone and ineffective as he is, you shouldn’t be considering him in fantasy leagues.

RB Larry Johnson, Kansas City Chiefs – Johnson left after an ugly injury to his right foot. The Chiefs haven’t ruled him out for next week yet but based on what it looked like, I’d be surprised to see him return. Priest Holmes is the backup running back in Kansas City.

RB Travis Henry, Denver Broncos – Henry is banged up again. We’ll have to wait to see if he’s going to play in Week 10. If he misses the game, Selvin Young would get the start at running back.

WR Chad Johnson, Cincinnati Bengals – Johnson was carried off on a stretcher after taking a hard hit. The good news is the initial tests showed no major injury. His status for Week 10 is unknown, however.

WR Anthony Gonzalez, Indianapolis Colts – Gonzalez dislocated his thumb on the first play of the game against the Patriots. He returned to the field but depending on if he can practice or not, he may end up missing the Week 10 contest.
