Going into the 2009 fantasy football season, there are many quarterback controversies all around the NFL. One such quarterback controversy will take place in Tampa Bay where the Buccaneers don’t have a clear cut QB at this point.

Sources close to the situation believe that Luke McCown has a good chance of beginning the year as the starter. He has been with the Bucs for the last few years but he doesn’t have much NFL experience. His only on field experience came with the Cleveland Browns in 2004 and the Bucaneers in 2007 and 2008. In total, he has has completed 142 of 238 passes and has nine touchdowns to go with 10 interceptions.

McCown has decent size and has a stronger than average arm. If he holds onto the starting gig, he’ll be a decent fantasy football option. However, going into the season, he’d be best used as a third-string fantasy QB.

Another option in Tampa Bay is Byron Leftwich. After starting his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he never really lived up to expectations. He struggled with injuries and lack of quality wide receiving options didn’t help.

Last year, Leftwich won a Super Bowl ring as Ben Roethlisberger’s backup. In his limited time, Leftwich was impressive. If he wins the Buccaneers jobs, he doesn’t have a high ceiling but he doesn’t have as risk as McCown due to his experience.

Last but not least is Josh Freeman. The Bucs picked him in the first round and he’ll eventually be the team’s starter at QB. The question is when his time will arrive. It might be this season but it also might take a few seasons for him to grow into the position.

With the Detroit Lions having the top pick, Matthew Stafford could possibly hear his name called first overall. After seeing how Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco played in their rookie seasons, the Lions may hope that Stafford could have similar success. Although inconsistent at Georgia, Stafford’s potential is undeniable.

1) Matthew Stafford – Georgia
With the Detroit Lions having the top pick, Matthew Stafford could possibly hear his name called first overall. After seeing how Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco played in their rookie seasons, the Lions may hope that Stafford could have similar success. Although inconsistent at Georgia, Stafford’s potential is undeniable.

2) Mark Sanchez – USC
USC has become Quarterback University in recent years. Even Matt Cassel, who was a backup at USC, proved he could be an NFL starting QB. Mark Sanchez will likely need a few years to gain experience before he’s ready to start but he could be the best of his class down the road.

3) Josh Freeman – Kansas St.
Although some NFL scouts wonder if he’s capable of making the transition to the professional game, his tools are very impressive. He has great size at almost 6-foot-6 and 240 pounds. He has a good arm and also seems to be very coachable.

4) Pat White – West Virginia
Not too long ago, Pat White’s stock was higher. But after a lukewarm senior season, he’s on the outside of the top three quarterback prospects. Depending on his workouts and his results at the scouting combine, White could still potentially move up the board.

5) Nate Davis – Ball St.
Ball St. was undefeated in the regular season in large part due to Nate Davis’ play. Although he’d be a bit of a boom or bust pick for an NFL, Davis could surprise. In his last two seasons at Ball St., Davis had more than 7,000 passing yards and 56 touchdowns.

Heading into Week 13 of the 2009 fantasy football season, here’s a look at a number of super sleepers that can help your fantasy team. They might not be big names now but they could be down the stretch run of the fantasy season.
QB Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs have to be excited about Josh Freeman’s play since taking over as the starting quarterback. The rookie has performed well and has made Tampa Bay a much better team. From here on out, he’s actually a decent fantasy QB with a good amount of upside.

RB Sammy Morris, New England Patriots
Although Laurence Maroney is the starter for the Patriots now, Sammy Morris is healthy once again and could start stealing some of Maroney’s fantasy thunder. Keep an eye on his situation and know that his slice of the pie is bound to increase.

WR Jason Avant, Philadelphia Eagles
Okay, now it’s time to believe in Jason Avant. Three straight quality weeks for the Eagles. Mix in an injury to Desean Jackson and Avant makes a good third wide receiver in fantasy football for the time being.

TE Bo Scaife, Tennessee Titans
I’m not sure what has gotten into Vince Young but Bo Scaife now becomes a decent fantasy football tight end. If your TE goes down, Scaife is a solid plug and play at this point.
