Brett Favre, one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, has announced his retirement. The quarterback informed the New York Jets that he would not be returning in the 2009 season.

In his career, mostly spent with the Green Bay Packers, Favre passed for more than 65,000 yards and 464 touchdowns. He’ll be remembered for his courage, durability and his big play ability.

In the fantasy football world, Favre will be remembered as a quarterback who always gave your fantasy team a chance. On any given week, Favre was capable of exploding — even against great defenses. Near the end of his career, Favre had a resurgence and was once again a very sought after fantasy option.

In the 2009 NFL season, the Jets will have a lot of options at quarterback to replace Favre. If they are going to go with a player already under contract, Kellen Clemens would be the front runner. Before acquiring Favre last season, most league experts expected Clemens to get the nod at quarterback.

Outside of Clemens, the Jets could look going young with either Brett Ratliff or Erik Ainge. Ratliff is a 23-year-old QB out of Utah, while Ainge is a 22-year-old QB out of Tennessee. The Jets could also look to the 2009 NFL Draft and pick one of the top quarterback prospects.

A couple of final options are free agency or trade. The Jets traded for Favre last season so they might make another trade to find his replacement.

QB Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys - Romo hurt his thumb in Week 15 during the Cowboys’ loss against the Philadelphia Eagles. He kept playing but the injury obviously limited his effectiveness. He went without a touchdown against a defense which hasn’t proven to be overly great this season. If Romo further injures his thumb, Brad Johnson is next in line to be quarterback for Dallas.

QB Kellen Clemens, New York Jets – Clemens left the game against the New England Patriots with a rib injury. While Clemens has shown some signs of having the potential to be a good player, he isn’t a fantasy viable player at this point in his career. If he misses Week 16, Chad Pennington will get the start. With Pennington at the helm, the Jets’ offense might actually be slightly better.

QB Kyle Boller, Baltimore Ravens – Boller suffered a mild concussion and was forced to miss the end of the game against the Miami Dolphins. The Ravens ended up losing to give the Dolphins their first win of the season. Troy Smith is the backup quarterback and he’s looked good in limited snaps. Smith could be called upon to start this upcoming week.

RB Justin Fargas, Oakland Raiders – Fargas suffered a knee sprain against the Indianapolis Colts. He has been one of the real surprises this season. Coming into this year, he wasn’t much of a fantasy option but he’s proven to be able to handle the load. If he misses time expect either Dominic Rhodes or LaMont Jordan to start at running back for the Raiders.

TE Jeremy Shockey, New York Giants – Shockey fractured his fibula and is expected to miss the rest of the season. Shockey hasn’t had a very productive season in the fantasy football world. Other than one big week, Shockey has been quiet. If you have Shockey, hopefully you have a decent backup because you are going to need a new starter at this point.

QB Kellen Clemens, New York Jets – Clemens hasn’t looked too good so far in his short NFL career as a starting quarterback, but this week he has hope. Enter the winless Miami Dolphins. Although the Dolphins have actually played decent defense as of late, Clemens should have plenty of chances to come up with big plays. He has a very strong arm and the Jets should be able to move the ball. If you are need of a quarterback to start, look for Clemens as a pickup and play option.

RB Samkon Gado, Miami Dolphins – With Ronnie Brown out for the season, Ricky Williams out for the season and Jesse Chatman banged up, there’s a decent shot that Gado gets a good amount of carries this week. A couple years ago, Gado stepped in with the Green Bay Packers in a similar situation and played well. He’s not a very explosive back but he’s solid. Against the porous Jets defense, he’s a decent enough start.

WR Santana Moss, Washington Redskins – The Redskins are going to no doubt bring the emotion this week. Over the last couple games, Moss has been quietly effective for the Redskins. He has 14 catches over the last two games and seems to be returning to health after he battled injuries for much of the season. There’s a good chance that he could come up with a big play on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

TE Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers – The Niners offense finally looked good last week and that’s excellent news for Davis. When the Niners can move the ball, Davis becomes a nice threat near the endzone. He has great size and speed, especially for a tight end. If the Niners can again move the ball this week, Davis should be a big part of the offense. Over the last two weeks, he has ten receptions, including a touchdown in last week’s game.

QB Kellen Clemens, New York Jets
It’s just a matter of time before Clemens is named the starter for the Jets. The Jets offense has taken a step back this season under Chad Pennington, while Clemens has shown enough promise to warrant a look. The good news for Clemens is that the Jets have a decent amount of weapons on offense, so if he plays well he could put up productive fantasy stats.

RB Jesse Chatman, Miami Dolphins
With Ronnie Brown out for the season with a torn ACL, Chatman is the next running back in line for Miami. While Chatman hasn’t had much of an NFL career, he’s shown spurts of talent over the years. He should get a chance to prove whether or not he can carry the load for the Dolphins. So far, Miami’s offense has been very friendly to running backs, meaning Chatman is a must pickup if he’s available.

RB Chris Henry, Tennessee Titans
Henry stepped in for Chris Brown and had a nice game backing up LenDale White. While Henry won’t be a great fantasy start with White healthy, he could get enough carries to be a decent emergency starter. If White goes down, Henry could be the next in line, even when Brown regains his health.

WR Chris Henry, Cincinnati Bengals
The original Chris Henry is also a nice pickup off the waiver wire this week. His suspension ends soon and there’s a good chance he’s in the lineup in Week 9. The Bengals have struggled without him and he should see a lot of passes coming his way once he’s allowed back on the field.
