In Game 2 against the Chicago Bulls, Powe suffered a knee injury that was later diagnosed as a torn ACL and a torn meniscus in his left knee. Depending on how the surgery goes, there’s a chance that Powe might not be able to begin next season on the active roster.

Powe now joins Kevin Garnett in street clothes. Garnett is dealing with his own knee injury that will likely keep him out for the postseason as well. Without both Powe and Garnett, the Celtics’ chances of winning back-to-back titles appear to be extremely slim.

During the regular season, Powe averaged 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game in 70 contests.

The Celtics are currently tied with the Bulls at 1-1 in the best out of seven first round series.

Here is a video of Leon Powe’s amazing performance in Game 2 of the 2008 NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers:

Garnett’s injury is a strained muscle behind his right knee and while it isn’t considered serious, he has to take his time rehabbing it to make sure it doesn’t get worse.
This is obviously bad news for both the Celtics and Garnett fantasy owners. Although Garnett isn’t having a hugely impressive statistical season, he’s arguably the piece of the puzzle that makes Boston tick.

This is obviously bad news for both the Celtics and Garnett fantasy owners. Although Garnett isn’t having a hugely impressive statistical season, he’s arguably the piece of the puzzle that makes Boston tick.

For the season, Garnett is averaging 16.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Those numbers aren’t very close to his peak numbers while with the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, as long as the Celtics continue to win, don’t expect Garnett to be upset with his production.

With Garnett out, expect Leon Powe, Glenn Davis and Brian Scalabrine to get more minutes. Powe, of the three, has the most upside. His per minute numbers are good and with extended playing time, he could become viable in fantasy basketball.

The other ripple effects on the team will be a bigger role for Kendrick Perkins and more shots for Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo.

PER has proven to be a pretty good measurement of a basketball player’s ability. It’s especially useful to help find players who could breakout once given more playing time. Here are some players that have high PER’s but low minutes per game average.
Marreese Speights, Philadelphia 76ers, 20.68 PER
Throughout the season, Speights has had a high PER. The fact that he’s consistently led all rookies means that he’s probably the real thing. For every 40 minutes he plays, he’s putting up 40 points and 10 rebounds. Keep an eye on any spike in minutes played because he has shown star potential.

Brandan Wright, Golden State Warriors, 19.14 PER
Wright had a high PER last year as a rookie and now as a sophomore has an even higher PER. He’s recently been starting for the Warriors, which is very good for his fantasy basketball potential this season. If he can consistently get 30 minutes per game he could become a very solid fantasy option.

Carl Landry, Houston Rockets, 18.34 PER
A lot like Wright, Landry is a sophomore who is once again putting up a high PER. Showing that his rookie year was no fluke, Landry has been doing a lot on a per minute basis. If the Carl Landry trade rumors have any legs, he could bust out onto the scene once given ample playing time.

Leon Powe, Boston Celtics, 17.17 PER
With the Celtics stumbling down the Eastern Conference standings, they might have to re-work their rotations. One option is to give Leon Powe more playing time. Powe has done well but he’s only playing 15.2 minutes per game. If he can up that to 25 minutes, Powe could become fantasy viable.

Kendrick Perkins
Kendrick Perkins hurt his shoulder in Game 4 and his status for Game 5 is in doubt. The Celtics are saying that he has less than a 50/50 chance of playing. Perkins, who has been banged up a number of times during the playoffs, would likely be limited if he did play. If he can’t go, expect PJ Brown or Leon Powe to get the start at center for the Celtics.

Rajon Rondo
The Celtics’ starting point guard has an injured ankle that kept him out for much of the second half of Game 4. His ankle injury is being classified as a bone bruise. If he can’t go in Game 5, expect Sam Cassell or Eddie House to get the start in his place.

Paul Pierce
After injuring his knee in Game 1, Pierce suffered another injury in Game 4. Thankfully for Celtics fans, this injury was deemed minor. Pierce will be ready to go in Game 5.
