QB Matt Cassel, Kansas City Chiefs
After being traded to the Chiefs in the offseason, big things were expected from Cassel. So far, not so good. In Week 3, he passed for only 90 yards. While he did have two touchdowns, that type of yardage makes him a questionable fantasy start at quarterback for the time being.

RB Matt Forte, Chicago Bears
In most fantasy football drafts, Matt Forte was picked in the top five. After three weeks, that looks like a bad selection. He’s not producing much and his chemistry with Jay Cutler doesn’t appear to be great.

WR Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals
After being the top wide receiver in many fantasy drafts, Larry Fitzgerald has been good but hasn’t lived up to the hype. With all the receiving options in Arizona, there’s no guarantee that he’ll be able to reach that level.

TE Zach Miller, Oakland Raiders
Many fantasy experts thought that Zach Miller would have a breakout season. However, with JaMarcus Russell stinking up the joint, Miller has definitely been underwhelming leading into Week 3 of the 2009 fantasy football season.

RB Matt Forte, Chicago Bears
Even though Matt Forte has started 2009 with a dud, don’t lose hope. His Week 2 stinker came against he stout Pittsburgh Steelers defense. Expect him to bounce back in a big way in the next two weeks.

WR Anquan Boldin, Arizona Cardinals
Anquan Boldin has been slowed to start the season due to injury. But in Week 2, he showed that he’s on the right track. Over the course of the year, expect Boldin to regain his standing as a top fantasy receiver.

TE Greg Olsen, Chicago Bears
Don’t give up on Greg Olsen yet. Jay Cutler is getting more and more comfortable and once he’s totally comfortable, expect Olsen to be a big part of the passing attack.

3. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville Jaguars
Maurice Jones-Drew finally has the starting job to himself this year. Can he be a dominant starter or is he built to be a backup?

4. LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego Chargers
In recent history, LaDainian Tomlinson has always been near the top in the fantasy football running back rankings. But after a so-so season, the end might be near in his stellar career.

5. Matt Forte, Chicago Bears
Last season, Matt Forte was a very good rookie who seemed like he was built to produce in fantasy football for a long time.

The Lions will likely complete the first 0-16 season in the history of the NFL, but Calvin Johnson isn’t at fault. He’s had a very consistent season, even though he’s had to withstand mostly horrible quarterback play. If he ever is put in a situation with a good quarterback, he could become the best wide receiver in the NFL.

TE Tony Gonzalez, Kansas City Chiefs
Tony Gonzalez has been the only consistent fantasy football tight end of 2009. Just about every week of the season, Gonzalez has produced for his fantasy football owners. Not bad for a player thought to be too old.

6. Brandon Jacobs
With the Giants looking like a powerhouse, Jacobs will retain value.

7. Marion Barber III
Even though not as explosive in 2008, he’s still a TD threat.

8. Frank Gore
Gore continues to prove he’s one of the most talented backs in NFL.

9. Michael Turner
Against poor defenses, Turner is money.

10. Chris Johnson
If LenDale wasn’t in the way, he’d be top five pick.

11. Steve Slaton
The Texans offense is getting better and Slaton is growing in value.

12. Tom Brady
Those 50 touchdowns won’t be easily forgotten.

All indications point to Kevin Smith starting for the Lions at running back. Smith doesn’t have much competition — considering that Tatum Bell is his backup. He could be a big factor if he can stay healthy.

This season, a number of rookie running backs have become fantasy football sleepers. If you can get these players on your fantasy team without using a high draft pick, you could be sitting pretty if sleepers pan out.

Kevin Smith, Detroit Lions
All indications point to Kevin Smith starting for the Lions at running back. Smith doesn’t have much competition — considering that Tatum Bell is his backup. He could be a big factor if he can stay healthy.

Matt Forte, Chicago Bears
Like Smith, Forte is also expected to be the starter. While Forte is arguably the more talented player, his situation doesn’t look as promising. He’s on a team with a bad offense and has more talent behind him at running back, including Kevin Jones and the other Adrian Peterson.

Ray Rice, Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens are starting Willis McGahee at running back. However, many team insiders claim Ray Rice has looked better so far this season. If McGahee struggled, expect Rice to get plenty of time.

Jonathan Stewart, Carolina Panthers
Although he has to share time with DeAngelo Williams, expect Jonathan Stewart to have a solid year. Williams is a finesse back, which should allow Stewart to get goal line carries.

Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh Steelers
Although he was picked in the first round, Mendenhall has his work cut out for him in terms of getting carries this season. Willie Parker is the starter and has a successful history with the Steelers. Mendenhall also had trouble with fumbles in the preseason.

Tim Hightower, Arizona Cardinals
With Edgerrin James likely slowing down in Arizona, Tim Hightower is a player who could be asked to add juice to an otherwise tepid ground game. Expect the Cardinals to give James more rest this season and give Hightower a chance to prove himself.

Here is a highlight reel video of Tim Hightower in action:

What happened during the Bears busy offseason?

While it was certainly a crazy offseason for the Bears, what if Brett Favre ends up with the Bears? The craziness would reach an all-time new high.

With Jones in the fold, there should be a lot of competition for the starting running back job. In addition Jones, the Bears have rookie Matt Forte and returning veterans Adrian Peterson and Garrett Wolfe. Right now, it appears as if Forte is the favorite to be named the starting running back.

While Forte is the favorite, Jones can’t be overlooked. He has had great success in his career at times and if it weren’t for a number of injuries, he’d likely be considered to be one of the best young running backs in the league. Keep an eye on Jones to see if he eventually wins the starting running back job. If he does, Jones will have very good fantasy football value.

Here is more Kevin Jones analysis:

The Chicago Bears signed rookie running back Matt Forte to a four-year deal. Forte, who attended Tulane, is the leading candidate to be the starting running back for the Bears in 2008.

Coming into this offseason, the Bears were prepared to go with Cedric Benson as the team’s starter once again. But Benson got arrested twice, once in a boat and once in a car, and the Bears decided to release him. With Benson out of a job, the Bears now turn to a rookie.

While Chicago also has Adrian Peterson and Garrett Wolfe on the roster, Forte is considered the most likely to start. He’s a bruising back with deceptive speed. His powerful presence should make him a good fit in Chicago’s offense.

His fantasy football projections for 2008 are unclear. The Bears offense looks rather weak and he will likely have to share carries, at least to some degree. However, Forte looks like a player who could become a touchdown vulture and could produce enough on the ground to make him a fantasy football running back starter.
