After Garnett struggled through a series of games and practices, the Celtics have decided to shut him down for the time being. Boston announced that he will miss at least the next four games. In the best case scenario, Garnett would be ready to return for the last three regular season games.

After Garnett struggled through a series of games and practices, the Celtics have decided to shut him down for the time being. Boston announced that he will miss at least the next four games. In the best case scenario, Garnett would be ready to return for the last three regular season games.

For fantasy basketball purposes, Garnett isn’t very valuable at this point. The only way he holds any value at all is if your team will need production in the very last week of the regular season. Even then, it doesn’t sound certain that Garnett will be ready to go.

The Celtics right now are concerned only about getting Garnett healthy for the playoffs. If he isn’t healthy, the postseason run this year won’t be nearly as long as it was for Boston last year. With that in mind, don’t expect the Celtics to risk anything during the regular season. Even if Garnett is active for the last three games, it’s doubtful he would play extended minutes.

If you are looking for a fantasy basketball player who may be able to step up in Garnett’s absence, consider Glen “Big Baby” Davis. Big Baby is averaging 19 points and 11 rebounds per game over the last two outings. In both of those games, Garnett wasn’t able to go and Davis got a lot of the minutes. Another option is Mikki Moore, who is averaging seven points and 10.5 rebounds in his last two outings.

Although not much was planned for Abdur-Rahim during the 2008-09 season, his retirement may open up more of an opportunity for the younger bigmen on the Kings. Justin Thompson, the 2008 first round draft pick for Sacramento, has a chance to start at power forward this year. During summer league, Thompson should a varied game that even allowed him to play minutes a small forward.

The Kings may also decide to play more of Brad Miller and Spencer Hawes together. While these two players are similar, they both have a perimeter game that allows them to play off the block. Mikki Moore should get plenty of minutes and Sheldon Williams will be given a chance to shine.

Here is a Shareef Abdur-Rahim highlight video that helps us remember how good he used to be:

Erick Dampier, Dallas Mavericks
Dampier is quietly coming on strong for the Mavs. He has beaten out DeSagana Diop for most of the center minutes for Dallas. While he isn’t going to give you huge amount of stats, he’s efficient and can help you with his blocked shots.

Joakim Noah, Chicago Bulls
Noah has had good per minutes stats all year and has had a few games recently that could open up some playing time for him. While the Bulls have a loaded front court, Noah is talented and can be a fantasy mainstay once he gets enough playing time. However, for the time being he’s risky until he starts getting consistent minutes.

Mikki Moore, Sacramento Kings
Moore is a decent plug-and-play possibility at center. He won’t be hugely productive but he also won’t hurt you. Moore is adjusting to life without Jason Kidd and is getting better as the season progresses. As a backup fantasy center, he’s not a horrible option.

Channing Frye, Portland Trail Blazers
Frye has shown huge potential in his career, especially back when he was a rookie for the New York Knicks. While he still is struggling a bit after being traded to Portland, he’s playing better as of late. His confidence has improved and it appears as if he’s rediscovered his shooting touch. He’s the type of player who could explode for a big second half of the season.
